Microphone Problems with Vista

Ok, so my Google-fu is the weaksauce....

So tonight, while playing Team Fortresss 2, I plugged in my microphone and headset in order to enjoy a lil voice chat with the other players. Well, lo and behold. after plugging said microphone into the jacks (I tried both of them) it won't work....

what's more...it seems my forward jacks won't work for the headphones either...

Now, normally I would have figured this would be a problem with a connection on the front from when I built the rig a few months back, but I checked the internal connections, and their all good.....

I checked under the Playback options, and the Microphone is picking up on the front jack, and is even says "working" under properties. I got the gain up to +30DB, yet the microphone picks up nothing on either port!

So....anyone has any ideas?

Whoa dude don't mess with the gain.

In the spirit of worthless SDN advice, I'm going to point out you DON'T WANT playback options: you want RECORDING options. Right click your sound hting, go to recording options, and make sure the default (green tick) is the one you're using (ie I use a wireless USB headset, so not the onboards). You'll want to whip out sound recorder and yell a bit to see if you're getting a signal, and be sure to turn the gain down before you use it - nobody wants to hear you rasping at 210W.
