Advent Rising and Guilty Gear

I was just wondering how many people here played/play either of these games, and what they thought about them, since as most people I meet have never heard or played these games.

Well, if you're going to play Guilty Gear then I must first warn you, Bridget in a man. Ok now that little factoid is out of the way, I can tell you that Guilty Gear is one of the best fighting game series to come out in a long time.

Yeah, I remember when I found that one out.

I played Advent Rising, and really enjoyed it, despite the fact that it was panned by critics. Sure, it had some flaws, but it was still fun running around gunning down stuff, and even more fun once you got Forc--I mean, psionic powers. Did you play the boss battle after the credits? Too bad that it didn't sell enough to get sequels. Guess I'll never know what happened to humanity.

What I loved about Advent Rising was that it was supposed to be a Halo-killer that, apparently, even ripped off visual designs from Halo. It also had the best marketing ploy EVER. First person to beat the game wins a million dollars!
Dumbasses.
I pretty much avoided that game because it honestly didn't look that interested and any game that had to promise a million dollars to its players had to have something wrong with it. It's like going to a prom with a blind date where the prize is given to whoever successfully brings their date to orgasm. At that point you wonder if you're going to be picking up a Xenomorph Queen or the Crushinator 3000.
As far as Guilty Gear, the game is okay, but my favorite part about it is the music. That stuff kicks ass.

Not to mention the thousand little music jokes. The character names and the move names, especially...

The aliens look surprisingly similar to the Elites from Halo was the big thing that I remember. I forget if there was much else, but that was the big thing people were griping about.

What the fuck?
The aliens in Advent Rising have 4 fucking legs! Their jaw doesnt split into 4 parts!
Unless someone can point out a similarity, I just dont see one.

Four legs?
The lack of jaw splitting is, at best, a minor point. Their legs, arms, necks, and heads are pretty similar barring that one point (and maybe number of fingers).

Yes, four legs
(click overview, and then click characters)
These guys have their eyes near the front of their head, not near the sides, different shaped heards, I think less fingers? and kinda look (at least to me) that they have more muscle (though I havent seen close pictures of Elites to know)
I mean, I guess they look
kinda the same but... then again, so do alot of things.

Son, those ain't legs. They might be lower than the waist, but they're clearly arms, because they don't seem to be used for walking. It's rather a key distinction.
I'll cede the point on the extra appendages, but the rest of the stuff is pretty cosmetic. When you look at the general outline for them you can't really see much difference between them and the elites.

Actually, they do use them for walking and running, its just that they can also be used as hands, I guess like a monkeys legs or whatever.
Yeah, besides the extra limbs and jaw thing, they do kinda look the same, but then again, arent the Marines in Halo inspired by the marines in Alien? Lots of things inspire lots of other things, so I dont see why people cry foul over it...
(an example of the legs thing is on website, the buy now icon)

There's inspiration, and then there's riding coattails, which is what people were accusing Advent Rising of. Given that the game was already making comparisons to Halo, the act of having anything even remotely similar to Halo was going to result in negative comparisons, especially since the game suffered from a serious lack of polish.

Who cares? It let you HEADSHOT TWO ALIENS AT ONCE WITH DUAL WIELDED ROCKET LAUNCHERS WHILE FLIPPING THROUGH THE AIR IN SLOW-MO.
If ANYTHING in Halo comes even remotely close to the awesome of that one feature, I haven't ever seen it. Period. Sure it has faults, but the fact that you can do the aformentioned slow mo dual-wielded weapon headshot is far more than enough to make up for it.
Also: Those were multipurpose appendages used as both arms and legs IIRC. Elites also are more like humanoid lampreys, while Seekers looked more like hexapodal dinosaurs that stood upright.
And then there's the completely different visual style between Seeker equipment and Covenant equipment... It's fairly hard to say they were ripped off. Inspired? Perhaps in part, but they're almost definitely not "ripped off".

I'll happily play Advent Rising now, even IF it was/might be an unpolished Halo clone, because my local walmarts are selling it for ten dollars. Ten bucks to flip through the air in slow-mo while John Wooing badguys with a pair of handheld rocket launchers? Yes please.

I'm still looking for someone to write a "Pillar of Autumn ends up in Adventverse" crossover. Master Chief may be a hero, a legend, but Gideon Wyeth's got the powers of a bonafide savior, dammit.

Ah yes, good times.

Dual wield. Rocket launchers.

yeah, the Seeker ships looked blocky, while Covenant ships were more sleek and such.
Now that I think of it, that is kinda odd, since more sci-fi the aliens have sleek ships, with humans having blocky ships, but the opposite is true in Advent universe, but then again in Advent the humans are like the strongest race apperantly (besides those weird blue guys)

I think the art design of the Seekers was to make them look more badass-sleek stuff doesn't look as dangerous as something big, blocky, decorated with glowing spines, and flinging missiles at you.
The aerodynamic human designs implied that they were for a race that cared about efficiency and aesthetics. Seeker designs implied that they had more than enough joules to throw at the problem-they didn't need anything else. After a certain point, your energy budget is high enough that you kinda stop caring about the whole efficiency thing.
Human technology was far more primitive than Seeker stuff-they used miniature black holes and other types of technobabble beam guns, while humans just had .90 caliber select-fire pistols and such. :p
(yes, .90 caliber. I am not kidding on this.)
The Aurelian aesthetics were far more similar to the Covenant than anything the Seekers had. Also: D-Day reenactment with superpowers. That level was pretty fun.

Humans are supposed to be some kind of all powerful god-race in the Advent Rising universe, to the point that they appear in legend among all sorts of different alien races. They weren't all that powerful when the Seekers hit them with a big rock.
Also, Guilty Gear is the fucking craziest game I've played in a long time. Fuckin' Faust.

Advent rising is a fairly good game if you are interested in some good old shooting. Personally, I found little appeal in it, except for the music.
What I hated is the plot.

I started playing GG in #R, and then when Ky became an unstoppable beast in Slash I was really happy. I've been meaning to pick up Accent Core, probably on PS2 for upscaling on my PS3, but the Hori Wii stick looks really nice, and I love buying new fighting sticks.

My friend's a huge fan of Advent Rising and says that the plot is pretty good. What were the problems you had with it?

They look more like Evangelions-- specifically, miniaturized versions of Evangelion Unit 03-- to me.

Of course, this was because the Seekers had been running around killing every human world they came across so we wouldn't rise back up again.
