Wii problems/troubleshooting

This isn't for me as I am firmly against exercise during video gaming, but TWO co workers came in to work today asking me for help with their Wiis.
Both got similar if not the same message: "An error has occurred. Unable to read disc. Refer to trouble shooting in the owners manual" or something to that effect.
My boss, who's son got his Wii, got this error and the manual said to unplug the Wii and let it sit for about 5 minutes. This worked for him, so far.
My other co-worker got the message, but after doing what the manual said, plus reorienting the Wii from vertical to horizontal, the Wii will no longer read ANY discs.
So my questions are; Has anyone else experienced this with the Wii? If so, how did you solve the problem? Is this problematic of the Wii?
Any info would be helpful. Thanks

He should send it back to Nintendo if it's still under warranty. I've never had any problem with my system reading discs.

That's the first I heard of that error. It sounds like the standard disc read error they've been using since the GC days, so either there is a problem with the discs (dust, scratches, whatever) or the laser died.
I don't think there's luch you can do except hope the problem goes away or return the Wii for servicing. Nintendo gives a one-year warranty on hardware, usually, so if the console's new they should be able to get it fixed.

A lot of people don't look after disks. If you can't examine the disks, it may indeed be a proper read error. I haven't had any similar problems with mine: just the 'shopping channel so slow it crashes the Wii' thing.

It's not damaged discs as everything in both situations weren't used until the day after X-mas, including the Wiis. These are both brand new systems.
UPDATE: My co workers GF contacted Nintendo and they told her that the problem is that they left game in the console over night and that the discs must be ejected before powering down.

Eh? I leave disks in mine all the time.

Yeah... This was a WTF moment for me. I have been leaving discs in everything since they started using discs

Nintendo used to say you can't leave carts in your NES, either. I think it's just a way for them to cover their asses: moving a Wii with a disc inserted can't be good for either.
If they really didn't want people leaving discs in, they would've added an auto-eject on powerdown.

You're a disk-leaver in-er since way back?
I've had my Wii do strange things, but a bit of a reboot usually fixed it. Once updated it's a lot more stable.

Update you say? Hmmm.

Nintendo pushes updates through WiiConnect and on certain game discs - SMG, for example, checks your firmware version and updates your Wii when needed. It's hard to miss, really.

SMG updated mine as well, and I was fully updated as far as the autoupdate was concerned. Perhaps it was some kind of SMG-specific update?

I really doubt that, it'd be retarded to write a firmware for *one* specific game; supporting two lines of firmware would be insane. It's probably just a bug in the updater.

You know it isn't necessarily a complete firmware update, right? It could have changed a single software module for all we know.

UPDATE: So Nintendo has no fucking clue and he had to return it to Best Buy, which of course has no replacements... at ANY of the 10 closest locations.
They said it will be at least 2 weeks before they can POSSIBLY get it back to him once they receive it. D'oh!
