AVG Antivirus suddenly requires restarting with every update
Okay, a couple weeks ago AVG Antivirus started requiring a restart with every daily update. It didn't do that before this point, and it doesn't do so on my parents' computer, which has the exact same program. What gives?

I've noticed it isn't quite every updated but rather about 2 out of every 3. Not that this really changes things because I can't imagine that its fundamentally changing things to such a degree that a restart is required that often.

I don't use AVG, but why didn't you check their site as this (maybe) is addressed here?Rogue 9 wrote:Okay, a couple weeks ago AVG Antivirus started requiring a restart with every daily update. No that refers to seeing the 'reboot required" even after rebooting. The problem we are experiencing is that it seems like nearly every update requires a reboot while up until about a month ago only about 1 in 10 or 1 in 15 updates required a reboot so the frequency has drastically increased in a very short timeframe. I've looked around previously and seen nothing which addresses the reason why suddenly you have to restart so often.Mange wrote:I don't use AVG, but why didn't you check their site as this (maybe) is addressed here?Rogue 9 wrote:Okay, a couple weeks ago AVG Antivirus started requiring a restart with every daily update. Every day for the last three days at least here; I started keeping a tally three days ago and it hasn't missed one since. And the screwed up thing is, it says to restart before the update process is even finished; if I told it to restart as soon as it asked it would neither finish its ongoing virus scan or finish updating.CmdrWilkens wrote:I've noticed it isn't quite every updated but rather about 2 out of every 3. I had this problem as well for the last month and couldn't find a cause for it so I got fed up with with and downloaded a new copy of AVG free and uninstalled then reinstalled the program and I have not been asked by AVG to reboot for the last few days.Rogue 9 wrote:Every day for the last three days at least here; I started keeping a tally three days ago and it hasn't missed one since. I can't imagine *why* it would need to reboot so frequently. Is it patching your kernel or modifying core system software, that it subsequently requires for functionality? I find that ... disturbing. Also the idea of an AV program running as a kernel module disturbs me a tad (although it would be beneficial I suppose in terms of being able to more easily scan the entire system). That being said, doesn't Windows support dynamic loading of kernel modules?
I myself find AVG, and other anti virus software, to be so annoying, I've resolved to not install it on any more Windows boxes, and to, over the next few months, remove it from the rest. I'd rather be careful than waste the huge amounts of time required to run AV software.
Unless you're installing random freeware from the internet, surfing websites of ill repute, or opening unsolicited attachments, you're unlikely to get a virus.
