The OIAGPGFXUFSLE is nearly complete

Post by weemadando »

The OIAGPGFXUFSLE (Objective Interim AGP GFX Update For System Life Extension) is almost complete. I ordered a 7600GS (512mb version) to tide me over until I can afford/justify a total system replacement. The good thing? It was only $125 AU. Not bad at all.

My specs will be:
P4 2.8C
2gb DDR2
7600GS (512mb)
290gb of HDD

That should be enough to let me run at least some of the recent games (I'm still not even going to look at Crysis).

After much fiddling with my desktop I have revived it (disappointingly as I had wanted to blow much cash on new system).

But, it means that I'm online again. Hurrah.

*edit*

Question 1 - There is no real reason that I couldn't dismount my PSU and sit it next to/on top of my case is there? I'm just having overheating issues in hot weather - especially seeing as the case is tiny, super-cramped w/wires etc and the CPU heatsink fan blows straight against (2mm clearance) the PSU.

Question 2 - As a possible interim upgrade, what is the best AGP graphics card currently available?

Question - Based on that upgrade how well will:

World in Conflict
The Witcher
Call of Duty 4

run?

It was marked down by about 64% or something nuts... So I nabbed it. Now I'm just waiting for the delivery.

A 7600? You basically just pissed your money away. I was stuck in AGP-land for ages too, and I went out of my way to never, ever buy another AGP card. Good money after bad etc.

1) Probably passable. I played WiC on a 6600GT just fine on low/medium settings. It won't run Witcher worth shit on the back of a dog made of poo: it's really inefficient. I used my case with no sides and half the shit hanging out for years, before I bought a decent case.

2) Do not buy an AGP card. You're wasting your money. You can buy a whole new computer for like, 600 bucks. Just live with it until then. Your crapass AGP card cost AUD$130, my 8800GT cost AUD$330. It's just not worth it, save a month or so and get a new mobo/etc.

I'm saving up for a big tax refund hit.

So I'm looking for spending a little (130) to get six-seven more months of better performance.

Then, I am aiming to shout:
"All glory to the octo-core!"

Quad-core barely presents any performance benefit in gaming. I think the only game that even pretends to make any use at all out of a quad-core system is SUPREME COMMANDER, and there's sure as hell not going to be a game out there that even remotely uses an eight-core system. At this point, you're probably much better off getting a higher-clocked dual-core CPU.

Yeah - but at any rate in order to upgrade my CPU I need to update my case, Mobo and everything else.

So the interim update is just that - interim.

I 'gAIM' to please. ;) ;) ;) ;)

On a 6600GT at 12x10 with most of the shaders turned off and fuck-all AA/AF, it was passable.

Its all set up now and seems to be good.

CoD4 demo works well and Lost Coast gets 50+fps with most settings maxed out.

The best AGP card that currently exists is probably the HD3850 from PowerColor, but your CPU is so weak it wouldn't present any advantage. Dual core CPUs + accomodating motherboards are super cheap now and would be much more useful than any futher video upgrade.

I've already noticed a big performance increase. Plus the whole thing runs MUCH cooler and is way more stable.

The premium on old AGP cards is so high, that for what he paid for a piece of poo 7600 he could have bought an 8600. This is why I sat on my 6600 until it died and then bought a new computer. Fucking AGP cards. *waves fist*

I had an X800 with a dodgy power connector. The voltage on it went wild when doing any intense work (like say, games) and it heated up the case like a motherfucker.

130 (including next day courier delivery) = not much to pay really to fix that shit up.

If you are claiming it costs $1600 to buy a new computer, you're insane. Even replacing drives, a kickass machine would cost 100+100+330+240+120=890. I rebuilt my entire machine for like $500.

Hell, if you'd asked I'd have posted my now-useless 6600 to you for nothing. :)

$130 for 6 month of extra life is a bargain any way you slice it. In 6 months the new nVidia cards will be out and so will the Phenom triple-cores and the new Intel 45nm CPU's, and he'll be able to get a lot more for a lot less. He can easily save the $130 he spends now and more.

In my next case there will be SLI.

Accept no substitute. Unless its Quad SLI. I got to play Crysis on a system w/Quad SLI cards and ~3gb of video ram. That. Was. Amazing.

If you're actually going SLI you'd better be teaming up top-end cards.

Witcher should work fine - its really memory hungry. So much that you shouldn't even try with less then 2GB of RAM - however, graphically, its relatively tame. I've got it working great on a 2Ghz Turion, 2GB DDR, x1600 256MB, so it should work decently on your config.
