System Shock 2 trouble

I recently downloaded a copy of System shock 2 from Home of the Underdogs. For some reason, it's more prone to crashing then a drunken motorist. Is this a compatibility problem with windows XP? And is there some patch that can stop this?

Hoo boy, this should be good.
Word to the wise, HotU is not exactly a completely legal place to get games, chief, so admitting to it publicly? Not smart. System Shock 2 was never officially abandoned, meaning the rights to the franchise still exist in the hands of an existing company (Eidos, in this case, which owned Looking Glass Studios).
Translation: Still piracy. Not legal. Bad Monkey.
Regardless if you agree with how the law works in this case, you're in the wrong here.
As for the crashing? Well, yeah. It was a game designed for Windows 9x, not XP. Compatability mode helps, but it's not exactly a cure all. Plus I don't know what else is wrong with the .iso you downloaded, so for all I know, there's a Russian zombie program running in the background that fucks up the game. Such are the dangers of warez.

That, and the 90% chance that he's now running a stripped-down version that has god knows how much content snipped out to be downloadable. He's probably better off searching eBay for a genuine copy.

Bloody hell. They need a store like that website. I'd gladly buy it if I could.

eBay and Amazon both sell used copies, chief. Get on it.

To be fair, my completely legit copy also has massive issues with XP. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it spontaneously crashes. I for example, have real issues walking past the chem storage room on the Medical Deck.

That's true. Compatibility mode helps, but it only does so much. I shudder to think what Vista does to it...but ah well. Maybe I'll find some old copy of windows 98 and finally set up a legacy machine...
I can dream...

Actually for that particular game no content has been snipped out, it's the whole thing. I've never had any problems with mine, it used to crash when it had to play the videos, so I moved the videos to another folder. No real loss, there's only an intro video, an ending video, and a few clips showing a shuttle entering and leaving the dock. The shuttle videos are worthless, and the intro and ending videos I can watch before starting a game and after finishing one (respectively).
It even works with mods. I played this full conversion one that's dammed near impossible once you get to the infinitely respawning cyberassasins.

I'm pretty sure with some alchemy you can get it working pretty well. I can't even get it to start without unwrapping the icd to get an unprotected exe, for instance: Vista hates whatever it's trying to do and it crashes on startup. Patching, compatibility, unwrapping and locking it to one core gets your a reasonably stable version.
This keeps coming up, so just go
here.

Nevermind, I didn't see Stark's post.
