Hilarious rant on piracy from Audiosurf forums

Just... just read it. Making money from games? Get with the times!
Bobbias wrote:I agree with the first post. I love this game, but if it's any more than $10, I'm not likely going to buy it.

Here is my reasoning: Since torrents and cracking have become so common that it's possible to get nearly every single game on the internet for free, a game must really be worth the money to buy it. The internet is changing rapidly, and if you still cling to the old ideas that a game should automatically make you money if someone likes it, then you're going to have a hard time.

Now, a game must truly prove itself worthy of being bought, because most people don't like to part with their money very much.

The internet is becoming increasingly more free and open for everyone, and people expecting money for every service they provide is going to hurt. Look at myspace, look at StepMania look at youtube, and rapidshare/megaupload, photobucket. All of those sites are providing services to the people. Some of them have pro accounts you can pay for for extra features, but they all do a basic service, and do them rather well. Unless you really need th pro accounts, you're not going to buy them, but they still offer the basic service for free.

That is he model new game makers need to follow, acknowledging that not everything is going to get people to pay unless they offer something extra for the money, something above and beyond the basic product itself. It's the mentality that you're not just paying for the game, for the product, but for extra service, something the free players don't get that makes things better.

I understand everyone saying that you need to pay, and I agree, but I don't agree that it automatically deserves that much money because honestly, as cool as it is, it could be better. I've played some Metalcore songs, and I've played other types of music, and I find that anything with guitars in it doesn't render all that well. Especially throwdowns, and such. The engine can be refined a LOT, even now.

I'm not saying it sucks, because it is really fun, but I'm simply saying that just because it's good, doesn't mean it is excellent. It's innovative, and a good game, but I wouldn't consider it a Great game yet, because the levels stil don't match the song as good as something a StepMania simfile maker could do.

(http://youtube.com/results?search_query ... rch=Search some songs are terrible, but search for Reach, or DukAmok, or Toph, or Kilga, along with stepmania and see players who are big names in the scene, and all make really good notecharts by hand)

And I'm done here, I've stated my point, but I don't feel like fighting with people. You can feel free to use some of my ideas to make points and all that, but don't bother directly responding, because I'm not going to check here again today.
Note the totally awesome 'lol you are stupid to expect anyone ever to ever pay money for a game, I will never post here again' thing. Needs more hit-and-run! :) And remember, youtube aren't charging so games shouldn't either: games should clearly rent advertising space instead. :)

And I hate a lot of shit, but the Audiosurf beta was fucking COOL. It reads your MP3s/AACs/etc to create a Wipeout-style track based on tempo in full rollercoaster 3D, and you grab beats in various colours to play a columns style game for points. It's quite well done, heaps of fun, and WAY harder than shit like GH3 because istead of 'following' a wall of notes, you have to weave in and out grabbing only the beats you want for the best score. I'd pay 10USD for it in a second.

Metal and techno will give you epilepsy, though. FUN epilepsy.

One unfortunate side effect of the success open source software and ad-supported internet services is the perception (by morons) that software engineering effort can and should be free.

The problem is that there's a perception that nobody had to work really hard to make it, because a lot of people have never done any programming. Mind you, I'm no programmer myself, but I've done enough hobby programming to know that writing a major application must be a gigantic pain in the ass.

But take all of the teeming masses of idiots who think that you can administer a beat-down to a professional scientist about evolution after 2 hours with Google, and imagine them applying these same "research skills" to computer programming; it's no wonder they have a massively distorted idea of how easy it is.

I want to hear more about this Audiosurf game. Can you enlighten me, Stark?

I'd be really curious to see if the ad-supported model can actually support a commercial game. So far, every time we've seen ad-supported games, everyone is immediately against the concept because unlike advertising on TV, radio, or the internet, you don't get the content free in exchange for watching the advertisements- you still pay, AND get the ads.

I would really like to see games where you might have say Coca-Cola ads on the loading screens and on billboards, and in exchange you get the game free or very cheap. It might be odd in a game like Zelda, but I'm sure it could fit it in into most racing and sports games and movie-license games and MMOs...

Didn't UbiSoft do that recently? I'm sure I remember them releasing a whole bunch of older games like FarCry, Prince of Persia for free download that had adverts on every loading screen.

It's a really fun game. Essentially it reads you songs and makes a rollercoaster style map of them with blocks set to the beat. Then you can play multiple different modes of it depending on what you feel like. There was a free beta this past weekend which is over now but check your PMs.

That being said I've played this game and I really like it and the day it becomes available for sale I'll buy it unless it's more than $30ish. And then I'm only not buying it because I don't want to spend that kind of money right now.

As for the author of the piece, yes I can see where he's coming from. It's very very simple to get games for free nowadays so why should you pay for something when you can get it free? To be quite frank I do follow that model sometimes. There are games out there which I would not play if I couldn't find them for free. But I make it a point to pay for games which I really enjoy because I want to support them and what they do even if it would be much easier to download a "free" copy.

EDIT: If you share interest like Phantasee PM me.

Holy fucking shit it's everything I've dreamed of!

I'm not even kidding, I've dreamt of playing a game like this when I've fallen asleep listening to music.

They did, and it's a pretty cool idea. I'm just sad it's not being done with new releases.

The sad part, is that this guy might get his wish, as many game developers are churning out increasing amounts of crap in an effort to reduce production costs, and ride the "fad wave" of the moment.

As for games with both free content, and enhanced payed-for content, those already exists in the MMO market, and again, they are utter rubbish that gives extremely unfair advantages to their paying customers in an attempt to force free-riders to pay for the service (and, regardless, they tend to be crap anyway).

Just type "free MMO" in google...

In fact, now that I think of it, the concept of free upgradeable content is what demos and shareware are all about...

One example of a advert-using-game would be Shadowbane, a commercial MMO who went free, adding adverts in the loading screen, yet maintaining a level of quality, but such a game is rare among its kind.

Anyway, I agree that entertainment media tends to be overpriced, but expecting not to pay for it is like expecting not to get your paycheck at work.

The thing is, if ads are going to pay the possibly millions of dollars it costs to develop a game like that, the advertisers are probably not going to just settle for a few loading screens. The game developers are going to have to give up some of their creative freedom in order to please them, which is something I'd hate to see. There's a commercial where GTA is made into a friendly experience through the power of Coca Cola™. If they had really sponsored GTA, you could expect that the game would be pretty similar to that, since a corporation like that would most likely not be too happy with sponsoring such a relatively controversial game, and would demand they cut back on the violence, or withdraw their money.
