Chairman Eeegor couldn't hold back his amazement as he gazed at the majesty of the galaxy around him. His background as a scientist gave him great knowledge of the inner workings of stars and galaxies, but it never took away his appreciation their stark beauty. Now that warp points had been discovered, it was possible to make trips in months that had previously taken years, decades, centuries, or millenia. Concurrent with this great discovery came the invention of small and efficient colony modules to carry the Eee throughout this open new galaxy. Now that they knew where to look, the Eee could even use hyperwave telescopes to see what was going on in systems that were linked by warp points, and they were astonished to find a multitude of other advanced races. Chairman Eeegor quivered in excitement at the prospect of flourishing trade and a peaceful exchange of ideas with these noble travellers of the stars.

Emperor Gaius Aurelius I huddled his ornate, violet robes about him as he surveyed the work being done below. The orbital shipyards were undergoing extensive renovation so as to service the new line of starships now entering service, and as a result the interior heating left something to be desired. Work crews scurried and heavy machinery roared beneath the monarch, intent upon completing their tasks on schedule.

The telltale metallic clang of boots upon the catwalk where he stood caught Gaius's attention. One of his senior aides strode up to stand beside the emperor and saluted smartly. "Milord, your shuttle is ready."

Gaius nodded in acknowledgment. "Thank you, Piers. Tell them to wait a few minutes."

The aide bowed his head and spun on his heel, marching off the way he came. Looking back down, this time the emperor turned his gaze to the huge spacedock. Great spans of metal hung in the void like the long-dead carcass of a great alien beast, spines and cranes conjuring images of a barren ribcage since picked clean by desperate scavengers. There, the first of these new starships would be constructed, fitted, and crewed before embarking into the farthest reaches of the galaxy. Previously, the Empire of the Steel Rose had only explored and colonized the very nearest of star systems; a few mere light years away. Now the Empire could expand beyond those first baby steps and study the universe much more closely.

The imperial monarch checked his wristwatch. Best not keep the shuttle crew waiting, he thought. As Gaius wandered off the catwalk and into the sterile corridors of the station, he idly wondered if there were others out there; strange, alien creatures with that same desire to understand the cosmos. Or perhaps not so alien... only time would tell.
