I've been wondering apart from accessing some 18+ material in Youtube you don't really need the account to view videos and as I don't make any vids of my own, would the account be worth the hassle it takes to have it or not?

Unless you want to leave comments, probably not.

Sure. It doesn't take much time, and it's pretty handy at times. Why? You can add videos to your favorites. Then when you're at another location and want to show it to a friend, you can go to youtube.com/yourname and see all the videos you have marked as favorites.
Plus you can leave comments, though YouTube people tend to be very dumb and only slightly above 4chan in maturity. And you can rate videos and upload videos.
It's not much of a hassle to sign up, either.

It's even quicker if you already have a gmail account.

I've got three. It takes five minutes to set up, you have favourites and subscriptions, you can upload home videos and share them privately... as long as you don't splurge on a premium account it's not something you'll regret.

As mentioned it's pretty painless, plus bookmarking your favourite videos is always handy. You know there'll come a time when you're looking for something and a normal search won't find it...
