A SH4 mod in progress it seems.

A lot of the work is being done by commies.
Get your fill of sci-fi, science, and mockery of stupid ideas

So I assume there's going to be Pr. 949A Oscar II SSGNs.A lot of the work is being done by commies.
Even if it doesn’t change the damage system, a couple damage system mods are out that will work with other mods, Natural Sinking Mechanics is a good one, it replaces all the hit point shit with an actual simulation of watertight compartments, flooding and loss of stability.Stark wrote:Will it hack in actual damage, or will it silly use the crappy SH4 damage system?
Really? I've never played SH4 at all due to the change to a stupid hitpoints system - do these mods make it more like SH3?Sea Skimmer wrote:Even if it doesn’t change the damage system, a couple damage system mods are out that will work with other mods, Natural Sinking Mechanics is a good one, it replaces all the hit point shit with an actual simulation of watertight compartments, flooding and loss of stability.
I couldn’t say since I never played SH3, but basically the way thinks work are each ship needs a certain number of compartmented flooded to sink, hitting the same area multiple times wont increase damage because that area is already flooding, though flooding isn’t instant. IIRC with Natural Sinking Mechanics ships are assumed to have centerline bulkheads, so damaging them heavily on one side will cause capsizing and sink the things much faster. Sinking times are semi realistic, ships can take a couple hours to flood down.Stark wrote:

Reading that thread Shep linked too it seems one group is working on a 1960s Cold War total conversion mod and already has a November class that’s playable, though without a new interior. Another group is working on newer stuff including an Oscar and a Typhoon but it seems it’s pretty hard to make the game decently simulate modern sonar classification capabilities and guided torpedoes (the only guided torpedoes in SH4 are stern chasing passive homers)Vympel wrote:So I assume there's going to be Pr. 949A Oscar II SSGNs.A lot of the work is being done by commies.
Clearly I need to go find this mod. I got so tired of SH4's 100% predictable sinking patterns that I just got fed up with the actual game and stopped playing it. (I'm not even counting the bugs, or the game's chronic lack of attention to detail. JAWA sea LOL!)Sea Skimmer wrote:I couldn’t say since I never played SH3, but basically the way thinks work are each ship needs a certain number of compartmented flooded to sink, hitting the same area multiple times wont increase damage because that area is already flooding, though flooding isn’t instant. One can already play the Bismarck, Hipper and (the most advanced mod in that category) a german Schnellboot in SH3.CaptHawkeye wrote:Wait, if they could make this, what's stopping them from making playable surface ships? *Most* of the physics seem to be present. The models are already there, and a little bit of internet searching can allow one to find interior photos of some old US warships.
Yeah, but I heard the Bismarck and Hipper mods are old, limited by the gameplay design, and only work with the stock game, plus they're full of bugs. So I wasn't in the mood to have to re-install SH3 just for it. The Schnellboot modders complained about some problems with surface vessels too. And personally, I have zero interest in torpedo boats anyway.Thanas wrote:One can already play the Bismarck, Hipper and (the most advanced mod in that category) a german Schnellboot in SH3.CaptHawkeye wrote:Wait, if they could make this, what's stopping them from making playable surface ships? *Most* of the physics seem to be present. Where would one get these mods?Sea Skimmer wrote:Even if it doesn’t change the damage system, a couple damage system mods are out that will work with other mods, Natural Sinking Mechanics is a good one, it replaces all the hit point shit with an actual simulation of watertight compartments, flooding and loss of stability.Stark wrote:Will it hack in actual damage, or will it silly use the crappy SH4 damage system?
I can’t say I’m all THAT excited about sinking the entire IJN with an Los Angelus class though, just because I always really enjoyed sinking 175,000 tons of merchant shipping per patrol using nothing but my duel 40mm deck guns (absurdly lethal against anything short of a cruiser!). I’d much rather get an M-1 class submarine monitor with 12in battleship rifle as the main armament
Well, those problems seem to have been fixed with the Schnellboote. And trust me, nothing beats rushing into an enemy convoy at speads of 40+knots.CaptHawkeye wrote:
