Need advice: Dvd Burner power issue

So, I have an unusual problem. Sometime between last week and yesterday, my DVD burner has run into the issue that it cannot draw enough power to adequately function. It's got enough power to open, close, and attempt to read a disc while there is no IDE cable plugged in, but once the cable is in, it either does not respond, or on the other mount I tested, it makes noise as if it's trying to accelerate to speed, but never does. The only recent change that happened to this drive in the past two weeks was that I took it on a car trip with me, an hour and a half trip each way, though it was in its case then, and didn't fall or get battered about at all. It was working fine when I was on the trip, and was being recognized fine for a few days when I got back, but yesterday the issues above cropped up as I was attempting to burn a DVD. I presume that the problem lies in the power connectors in the drive itself, given that it had the same issue on two separate power sources, but if you think something else caused it, please, by all means, offer your opinion.
So I ask you all, what could have caused the connectors to go bad so suddenly? Is there anything I can do about it, or am I looking at picking up a new Burner in the near future?
Update: so it's getting power when the IDE cable is plugged in, but it only registers as "CD drive" unless a DVD is in the drive, and it doesn't read the disc (IE: tells me to insert one) when I tell it to open said disc. So I think it's well and truly smegged. I'll just go buy a new one tomorrow unless you all have some suggestion of how to fix this?
