Can someone recommend a freeware video making program?

I'd like to start making videos on youtube. The kind with a background image and slides possibly some sound.
At this point and time I am strapped for cash or I'd just slurge on a market version. But I was hoping there was a freeware movie maker out there somewhere and maybe someone here could offer advice.
