Shipping Computers

I was thinking about sending an older computer to a friend across the country. When I get a response back, I will decide what I need to do exactly.
What I am looking for are suggestions on how to package it for shipment? For example, I have been told by a friend to remove the hard drive for shipment.

I think the hard drive issue is in case you have important or compromising info stored on it and it gets stolen on the way.
If you're sending it formatted I shouldn't think it'd matter. But I'm no expert.
Otherwise just make sure the main case and the monitor are well protected inside the box with styrofoam or something.

Was told that they get easily damaged if shipped in a case....
Planning to only have 98 SE and some shareware programs so that e-mails, basic documents, and e-mails can be done.
Not really planning to ship a monitor

If you're uncomfortable packing it yourself, take it to the UPS Store/FedEx-Kinkos and have them do it...I know they would do a better job than I would.
