Why are there a bunch of removable devices?

My buddy has a budget Gateway with XP. He has 2 disk drives, but only one is showing up under the My Computer thing. I'm pretty sure that can be fixed in the BIOS menu, but it's also showing 4 more removable device icons. Any idea why those extra icons are there? There aren't any flash drives plugged in or anything.

Does it have a card reader built in? Card readers show up as a bunch of drives.

Ah ha. How can I check that?

Look at the front. In an OEM machine they'll usually be in a 3.5" bay these days, rather than a custom device on the facia.
Might be behind a flap or door on the front as well.

That's it.
Thanks!

No. It's there for a reason.

I know why it's there, I just don't think it needs to be in this case since it's connected to one of the USB headers on my motherboard, and I don't plan on disconnecting it anytime soon. I thought of a workaround, though. I'll turn on the hide inactive icons option, and set this one to always be hidden and the ones I want to see to always be shown.

It's not for the card reader itself, but rather for the cards you put into it, primarily.
