I'd love a glass die with roman numerals on it.

Look more like astrological/alchemical signs. The big zero is remiscent of the zodiac sign for 'Sun'.

Awesome.
Modern scholarship has not yet established the game for which these dice were used.
D&D First Edition of course!

Imagine the luck contained in that die. A small glass item surviving for almost 2,000 years. Fantastic luck!

What makes them think it was used for a game rather than as a fortune telling tool?

Honestly though, if I had $20,000 to burn... I still probably wouldn't buy it.

Well, fortune telling is best viewed as a game too :) It also means you can class religion as a form of LARPing ;)

Roman divination was mostly astrology, augury (taking omens through birdwatching), haruspicy (examination of the organs of sacrificed animals), and the reading of other "natural" omens.

My bet is that the D20 was used in some sort of drinking game.

Or some kind of gambling game, which may or may not (though probably did) involve drinking. We know the Romans had those. For instance, a quote by a certain Gaius Julius Caesar: "Alea iacta est" (The die is cast.)

I wonder if it'd be difficult to make one of these with some clay, broken glass, and a blow torch.

I want this original die. Just so that whenever it comes to something that needs a good roll, I get a +10 bonus for possessing the very fabric of history!

Psh, not too hard to work out a system.
