So, I have my favorite, who is yours?

(Ignore the joke options - I actually do want to know your real opinions.)

Vice City simply had more style than any of the other games, and that extends to the main character. Plus no agnst, no bitching, no pretensions of moral justification. Bellic second, CJ third. The annoying thing about the GTA3 guy was not so much that he had no personality, as that he (almost) never did anything on his own initiative.

Niko Bellic. I was unable to sympathize with CJ or Tommy because they were basically just both assholes. At least Bellic knows he's a monster. Course he won't shut up about it either. :)

GTA3 Guy, also known as Claude. The silent badass.

Also, it wasn't just "some guy" in GTA1. If memory serves, there were three chicks and four guys you could be.

Also, the "unnamed man" in GTA2 is Claude Speed. Go get the full GTA2 movie and watch the credits. Apparently the same man as in GTA3 but they're not really in the same canon (so far as we know *shrug*) so it may not be exactly him. But GTA3's Claude was almost certainly modeled after GTA2's Claude Speed.

Niko for sure.

*The people in GTA I were so unimportant you could give them their own names.

*Claude Speed looked like an idiot (in the intro, at least).

*Claude from GTA III has less personality than my keyboard and would probably nuke a major city for money.

*Tommy was an asshole who did nothing but fuck, rob, kill, and scream, usually in that order.

*CJ was an idiot and everyone's bitch. If you gave him money, he would probably do it. Not to mention all his poor decisions ("Hmm, I have almost a million dollars dripping out of my pocket. I just got a shitty little garage. Should I fix it up, invest my money, and buy some businesses out? Nah, I think I'll just yell at the walls. That's it!"). Not to mention he was so willing to get his brother out of jail that he would hijack a Harrier from a U.S. carrier and sink spy boats.

Not counting the Stories games, Niko is probably the most human character GTA has ever had. Hell, I never found anything interesting about Tony, and as nice and down-to-earth as Vic was, he would still run drugs as a soldier and then work with the guy who got him discharged. That majorly lowers his respect in my books.

The reason you hate him is the reason he's my favorite. Seriously isn't the point of GTA to kill, fuck, and rob (I don't know about screaming)?

I can't really identify with any one of them. More than being a anti-hero they were not heroes at all. Tommy and CJ were just assholes. What especially pissed me off is in the special intro movie where it showed cj robbing someone for his money and after the guy gave it without resisting he proceeds to pistol whip him and call him a bitch.

I haven't played gta4 yet so don't know about Niko.

Niko's the first GTA player character I've ever found to be even vaguely interesting, so my vote goes to him. Actually, GTA 4 seemed to have a fun cast in general.

Who was in GTA:London?

Personally I'd like to see a 3d version of that.

Haven't finished GTA IV yet (now that I've finished MGS4 for the first time it's back to GTA IV) but Niko Bellic's the best.

Vercetti, simply for sheer style, followed by Niko.

Claude.

I need to play the stories games, actually. I think the ps2 versions are reduced enough in price for me to justify picking them up at some time.

Tommy Vercetti.
Let's be fair. Regardless of what happens, you'll be playing any GTA like a ruthless amoral asshole who's frankly having a great time. So why not play as one?

I must say, if I couldn't pick Niko, I would pick Tommy. At least he knew how to run his business and was ruthless mainly when it counted the most. CJ was a pussy unless cash or his brother was involved. Let's not forget his "I need to do this alone!" shit when going after Smoke and an army of gangsters at the end.

CJ was an idiot gangbanger.

Tommy was a real gangster who knew what he wanted, and didn't bother with small-time Ghetto shit. As a character, Tommy wins hands down.

Haven't played GTA4 yet, though :D

Niko, hands down. He seems like a guy I would enjoy actually hanging out with and having a beer (COME HERE LITTLE YELLOW MAN!! GRRAARRRGH), whereas I'd be constantly in fear of Claude, Tommy, and CJ slitting my throat to make three floating stacks of money appear.

Tommy would slit your throat for looking at him funny. Claude would slit your throat just for existing. CJ would slit your throat if his brother would get out of jail the next morning.

In business, Tommy beat everyone. He got to the top within months and started with nothing but the clothes on his back, a hotel room, and a few hundred bucks. He ended up with the biggest mansion in Vice City, full control over the town, and plenty of sports cars and munitions.

Niko, if he actually cared about taking over the city and doing more than just raising his standard of living, could probably do the same, albeit in a longer time.
