Wanna play Fallot. On Vista.
So freaks space rays caught me after watching the Fallout 3 trailers and I deceided to try Fallout 1 out. My dad once brought a "Hall of Fame" set that included Fallout.
I want to play this on my laptop that has Vista. Barring any non-foreseeable problems, I should be able to play. If there are, please tell me now.
Also, does anybody have any tips for the game? I heard you can get some pretty powerful stuff with a luck of 10 but is it worth it?

I didn't have any problems running Fallout 2, but you might want to check NMA anyway. They've got mods to fix the UI and some other bizarre shit that you'll run into.

Nope, I recall no problems running Fallout 1 or 2 on vista. And I'll second the recommendation of No Mutants Allowed for unofficial patches and stuff. I personally recommend TeamX's Fallout 1 patches and NPC mod, and Killap's Fallout 2 mega-patch and restoration project...thing (restored quests, characters, items, areas, special encounters and more!)

Well, it might not work with Vista 64. But that's because Fallout is old enough that it might have 16 bit code, which Vista 64 won't run.

High 'Luck' stats will give you more chances to randomly encounter "good" events, you also are able to encounter things like the "Red Rider BB gun" which is powerful and accurate and uses dirt cheap BBs, and the alien raygun, which is stupidly powerful.
I always focused on 'Lockpick' skills, because it helps get past obstacles; and it lets you pull trikes like doing a mission for someone, refusing to take the reward (giving you go reputation points), and then breaking into their safe and taking the reward anyway.
And in FO1 to get your famous Dogmeat sidekick, you go to an early game town (the bigger one with the casino) and there is a dog bothering a shopkeep, give it a food item with meat. From then on it follows you and will attack enemies during a fight. Dogmeat is not invincible, so take care of him(ah, remembers giving Dogmeat needed stims in a fight because I didn't want him to die...).
Way down south there is a military bunker that the Brotherhood Of Steel will send you to. It is irradiated, so take precautions, but after doing the initial mission, go back, because that places has tons of loot.

Well, there's always VMWare or VirtualPC to run XP for older games. Plus, it'll let you run ancient games in a windowBeowulf wrote:Well, it might not work with Vista 64. But that's because Fallout is old enough that it might have 16 bit code, which Vista 64 won't run.
EDIT: Holy, F2RP is a huge mod, nevermind that Megamod
So does the installer stop working after it seems to have begun (like, do you get to see the menu asking which level of install you want), or does it crap out after selecting install from the auto run menu?

Duh question 2 - are you running in an old OS compat mode? Several games (such as Thief) won't run the installer in Vista, but if you set to win9x compat mode it works fine. You still need to fuck around to get the actual game working - I remember in XP I had serious video problems with F1 and 2 - but this should fake out the installer at least.Zixinus wrote: To coin the popular Sunnyville phrase: Duh. Of course.
When I get home I'll check my F1+F2 DVD; I should have put whatever fixes I found on that.

I've run both Fallout and Fallout 2 on Vista with only very minor problems, but I originally installed them on an XP system and just tossed the hard drive in my new Vista box, so I don't know about installation issues.
The only issue I had with the graphics was random pallet-swaps whenever my wallpaper changed (thanks to Display Fusion), but that was easily fixed by alt-tabbing out of the game and back.

Those Brotherhood of Steel assholes killed my entire party during the storming of the base. One with a minigun, in his zeal, shoved his weapon into my mate's back and sawed him in half to take down a mutant and my dog. I was so angry that I wanted to kill them all, but settled for cremating Ian, that fuck.LordOskuro wrote:Aww, poor Dogmeat... I managed to keep him alive for most of the game, until he got zapped crossing a force field in the Mutant Base..... shortly afterwards Ian got a rocket to his face, but I didn't feel so sorry for him.

Well, if all else fails you can always download DOSBox.
From the comments it looks like it can run Fallout without a hitch.

Shit, I am SO downloading that.

Here you go. I'm currently playing with Killlap's Restoration Mod; the Megamod seems a little too ambitious right now and probably bugged to all hell.

A question then, I have FO2, but since I have the European version certain quests were nerfed due to kids being taken out, the sidequest with the kid stuck down the well etc. I remember years back using a fan patch which restored these, but is there a way of installing Fo2 on Vista, restoring those settings and then putting in that patch/mod.

Just the resoration mod and nothing else?
Great. I like the idea of Suliks sister appearing, I must admit I always wondered if that was in the game, or even cut from the game.

The installer is fairly self-explanatory. You'll see.Jade Falcon wrote:Just the resoration mod and nothing else?
