Updating iMac RAM

I've been told that you should go through 3rd parties to update RAM on a mac. So I was wondering what vendors there are that provide RAM compatible with the iMac, and would these void my warranty?

Also how exactly do you update iMac ram anyway.

Apple seems to want to charge nearly $800 for another 2 gigs of ram, which is simply too much.

It will not void your warranty, and the process should be in the manual. Crucial.com will tell you what type of RAM you need: from there you can go to Newegg if you need.
