I have a preplexing problem, perhaps you can lend some insight? A friend brought over an HP Pavillion 7965(it was working when they left their office yesterday) and brought to my apartment, I went to boot it this morning to backup their data and now It semi powers up but has orange lights flashing on the front of the computer there are no error sounds that I can hear ethier. I have tried reseating the ram dimms, taking out the pci cards, vid card, changing power cables, reattaching all the cables to the board, and changing wires for the HDD's. Now the mother board is getting power the fans spin, the lights on the front of the computer blink... but it won't boot. Do you think this is a Power supply issue or possibly something I have missed? I also tried alittle googlefu but it failed me.

Sounds like there is something seriously wrong with the motherboard if it doesn't do more than that. Time to take it to a repair shop for maintenance/fixing or to get a new laptop. It probably needs a motherboard replacement, in that kind of situations they usually do.

I've seen problems exactly like this before, but with a Dell machine. The problem was the power supply. Considering that it's a cheap, easy fix, I'd go with that one before replacing the motherboard.

(By the way, Edi: I'm pretty sure it's a desktop, not a laptop.)

EDIT: If memory serves me correctly, the problem with the machine I was describing was intermittent: the computer would boot if left to cool for a long period of time, but would shut itself off eventually, and could not be booted again unless left to cool, etc. As I said, a new power supply solved the problem, though I had to buy one from fucking Dell -- a unit off the shelf didn't have the right connectors. That shouldn't be a problem for an HP machine, though.

Pavilion 7965 is a desktop, yeah.

Since you've already tried reseating everything, next step is to strip it down to bare bones and see if it will do anything.

If not, it's most likely PSU or mainboard. Either way you might be fucked, because some of that era HP desktops used nonstandard power supplies, and a standard ATX won't fit in the case or line up the screwst to secure properly, and the board will definitely be non-standard. (you might be lucky, you might not).
