Meet the Sandvich
Valve wrote:The Sandvich is the Heavy’s first unlockable. It tastes as good as it looks and heals 120 health. Like in real life, the decision to eat a Sandvich must not be taken lightly; The Heavy is completely vulnerable during the four second eating process, and his loud, happy sounds of vigorous chewing will draw enemies like tiny ant cowards to a picnic. OF DEATH. On the bright side, the Heavy’s Sandvich supply is unlimited, so his only real concern is being caught short while enjoying this delicious edible device. The Sandvich is a great tool for a Heavy defending an area, as it gives him the ability to replenish health between enemy waves without having to abandon his post. Similarly, an offensive Heavy without a Medic can step back from the front line and grab a quick snack before resuming his rampage. Beware, however: the Heavy must set aside his shotgun to take the Sandvich, and enemy Snipers are much more dangerous for a Heavy wielding only a minigun.
So the next TF2 update is due, and what do we get? A Sandvich, oh Valve, those crazy designers.
The main reason I posted this is because the entire update has now been posted on the update page and because it comes with a Meet the Sandvich video. Not as funny as some of the others but memorable because it's about a food item.

This is great. The Heavy update has been very satisfying. The Sandvich is an obvious highlight, as apart from being funny it's a fairly interesting piece of 'equipment'. I like the Killer Gloves of Boxing and Natascha looks even killier than Sascha (though with less damage). Also, the addition of Lumberyard marks a change in environment which is actually quite cool. Hopefully this will mark a new age of environments which are not deserty, industrial or desertly industrial.
You call
that breaking my spine?

So, you think Meet the Scout was foreshadowing, or inspiration?

The achievements seem to imply that the 'Pow! Ha!" taunt kills or at least hurts people like the pyros haduken. Can anyone confirm this?
Also, how does that taunt look with the boxing gloves?

Entirely new taunt for the boxing gloves. But no kill if you are wearing them. The Pow Haha taunt with regu-gloves kills, yes.
He does a boxing thing where he punches in the air.
And also actually says "nomnomnom omnom" while eating.

Yes, it is great hearing seven heavies on a Achievement server all eating their sandvich. Has since replaced my favorite moment of a 9v9 Heavy Melee only instant respawn match were the entire map was filled with the screams of dying heavies.
Natasha apparently does the same ammount of damage, only fires less bullets. Also has a neat new sound effect.
Overall the update was pretty good. The Kritzkrieg now charges 25% faster than the Ubercharge, which has already sold a lot of people back onto the rarely used Kritzkrieg. The KGB will be effective in several heavies I've playedl with atleast.
All and all much better than the disasterous Pyro update where they finally leveled the playing field with the Pyro, but then everyone bitched and moans so they completely undid it. The Pryo with the Backburner coudl finally hold his own against the two problem classes. The Demoman and Soldiers have no reliable counter, can be hugely annoying, and in largely turn the game into Soldier Fortress 2. They tried to fix this a little by making the rocket launcher *gasp* dangerous at close range. But that made everyone bitch and moan, as did Pyro's being able to survive an ambush against a soldier(which never happened before, and rarely does now, they just do a quick 180 and one shot you) and sometimes strife in close enough to take a soldier face to face could not be tollerated and so Soldiers were buffed back up to annoying gods and Pryo had everything stripped of them short of the awkward and 9 out of 10 times ineffective air blast.

Waiting to play on my home machine, as it is more godly than anything here (save one machine that isn't working). That won't be until next week though.

Erm, the 100 percent damage to self-rocketed soldiers still remains. And the pyros had nothing stripped from them save for the +50 backburner health bonus.

So is there ANY word on whether this stuff is going to ever come out for the Xbox 360?!

Valve is trying to work a deal with Microsoft so that they can release the updates for free. Right now, MS wants users to pay for the downloadable content (including new maps), and Valve will have nothing to do with that, noting that they have always offered updates for free on the PC.

Essential conversation:
Valve: No, we're not dicks, cut it out.
Microsoft: ...but we are.
Valve: And your point is?

The Scout's horribly girly scream at the end of the offscreen beatdown sold it for me.

No its not, though they didn't state it. I play on a server that Says "*Player* killed you with *weapon* from *distance* with *PLayer's remaining life* hp left." when ever you are killed. I am regularly getting killed by soldiers at 2-3 feet(I've never seen a melee weapon hit under 2 feet for reference of how close that is) and the has 120-160hp left.

i'm sorry but the notion that the Pyro should have the second most fucking health of all the classes is retarded pyrophiliac bullshit

Ok, nub question: How do you actually get all these crazy upgraded items and such? I see all these Heavies running around chowing on sandviches but I don't know how to get one.
Also, Pyros can go to hell. It's the only class that I consistently lose to unless I'm a Heavy.

You have to get the achievements, which consist of something like "take 1000 points of damage in a single life" or "survive a direct crit rocket" or stuff like that. Get enough achievements and you get a bonus weapon.

Aha, gotcha. Thanks.
While I'm at: What causes a critical shot? Is it just random chance?

Random chance, which can be skewed upward if you're on a roll.

I played some of the update today; the new Heavy stuff fun to run around with (though mostly we used Sniper). I was actually pretty astounded to see a Medic armed with the Kritz, which up until now I had never seen in actual use. A Heavy spewing a constant stream of blue bullets is frankly more intimidating than an invincible Heavy.

Critical hit chance explained
Brief summation:
Basic 5% chance to do a crit, doubled for melee weapons.
How much damage you've done in the last 20 seconds changes your crit chance up to a max of 800+ damage = 20% crit chance.
Medics get credit from their patients and engineers get credit from their turrets.

I've seen the Kritz used in game, but it's definitely most effective when combined with an Uber on a pyro or heavy (if you can do that, I've never tried or seen it tried). I imagine that I'll finally be able to get my ubersaw on Monday, since I still need two of the assist heavy achievements.

I know it's said in the "Meet the" video, but how many bullets is $200,000 worth? I.E., how many times will I have to reload in order to get that achievement?

With a Pyro or Heavy?
Please, use the Kritz with a Soldier, instant Nuclear rocket launcher. If you do everything right you'll get off either 7 or 8 rockets before the charge wears off, that's seven rockets which do nearly 200 points of damage and instantly kaboom everything but a medic healed heavy, pyro or soldier, the second rocket killing them. Get a good flank attack and you can turn the entire enemy team into
vapor in the span of one Kritscrege. Gold Rush is a prime option for this, I've had 14 kills, nearly the whole enemy attacking team off a single uber-Krit.
