Definetly rough on the edges, but it's interesting how the 40k franchise is starting to pop up more and more in mainstream media. I wonder how popular it can get over time.

It looks promising, but I have some issues with it.

First of all, what is that dinky peashooter the Marine is carrying around? Tactical marines have full-sized two-handed bolters, with definitely a lot more punch. If that's a bolt pistol, it's more like an SMG than a magnum, which it's supposed to be. I'd make the ranged weapon a pistol, with slower firing rate but more punchy individual shots, so ranged combat isn't a complete joke.

Second, those Chaos Space Marines are far too weak. They should be bosses, but higher-level mooks. If you need higher-level mooks, use gifted cultists or something.

Finally, I better be able to turn off that "cinemaction" thing. It would get annoying when facing a bunch of enemies.

Overall, I am looking forward to this. The scenery looks amazing and it seems like they got the feel of 40K right. Here's hoping they don't mess it up before release.

That space marine needs to put his helmet on. I am cautiously optimistic, they definitely need a bit more variety in the melee side. They also need to ramp up the blood and guts a bit more. Oh and I agree on the bolter thing.

I'm not impressed.

Did anyone else laugh when the guy said that the gun was really only a distraction to get up close and personal? A fucking rapid fire RPG is a distraction? To a fucking Chaos Cultist? If even one of those rounds hit, the cultist should be blown apart. Ah well. I suppose they needed to justify close combat with swords in a high tech future somehow. And it's not like the rest of the franchise isn't exactly the same way.

Or how about when he first stepped outside into close combat with two cultists and a Chaos Space Marine, and they all just stood in a circle and watched as the guy took them out one by one. Really hope they fix that.

But then again, if they did that, they might have to get rid of those "cinemaction" moments. Those are already going to be annoying enough after a few hours of playing, and it would be even more annoying to have the player shot by half a dozen guys every time the player stops to strike a dramatic pose after eviscerating someone.

I really like that even at this rough stage, the developers are willing to show off gameplay footage. And even though the enviroments are spare (which I'll chalk up to the early build), what is there looks fantastic.

But I agree, the bolter (and you can see that it is in fact a full sized bolter) is way to weak. Its ought sound like a damn anti aircraft gun and be blowing cultists in half.

Helmets are for sissies! After all, it's not like not wearing shortens your perspective lifespan! No siree, the only thing not protected is your head, and that's not important at all!

Grrrr kill stab maim burn at the continued insulting portrayal of bolters (though, to its credit, they seem to be using the canonical 4-round burst for it at least). The only game that's even gotten it remotely right is Chaos Gate with perhaps an honorable mention to Firewarrior. Plus the whole design decision to treat ranged combat as a glorified lightshow is pretty fucking retarded too.

Fun WH40K fact of the day: Bolter shells are 19.5mm rocket-propelled, armor-piercing bundles of pure, unmitigated, unadulterated death. They blow the ever-loving fuck out of whatever they hit. Like that scene in Terminator 2 where the T-1000 gets hit at the end by a grenade. That's what happens. Except there is a fountain of blood and perforated internal organs instead.

That said, it does look fairly decent overall. I wish they had gone more for a Gears of War style system with meaningful ranged combat, because if there's anything I hate more than the misrepresentation of bolters, it's the continued proliferation of the misleading stereotype of Space Marines being "lololol supar man rar charge stab with sword lololol".

2nd Fun WH40K fact of the day: Space Marines are a cohesive military force of shock troops and are organized accordingly. They have light armor support, air support, orbital support, heavy weapons teams, reconnaissance and covert ops teams, sophisticated command & control systems. OH BUT WAIT THEY ALSO HAVE ASSAULT TEAMS ARMED WITH CHAINSAW SWORDS GUESS THATS ALL THAT MATTERS AM I RITE

Grr.

Were those Chaos Guardsmen carrying Bolters?

To be fair, the designer did say that it was EXTREMELY rough right now.

I have no doubt that they'll eventually fix up ranged combat so that it is actually decent and can be used in parallel with melee. They'd be pretty fucking stupid to ignore the whole ranged combat part of the marine doctrine afterall. When they've gotten a bit more information out on what they are developing and how things will work (including information on a pc version..hopefully)

We'll see how it goes when there's more to go on.

Its not really hard to make a good 40k space marine game; just make Gears of War(Hammer) and your set. GoW was pretty much already a 40k space marine game.

Look at near the end of the video when the main character makes a chaos marine go up like a grenade. Extreme rough is an understatement. :P

Meh. I'll follow it, but I expect it to suck.

Looks like it's supposed to be a Bolt Pistol. The character looks like a Sergeant, hence the chainsword and pistol combo and no helmet.

Assassin's Creed was OK with it.

However, given that they're going for melee as the principal form of action, it would have been far more in character to play as an Ork.

No. You don't. Unless you want this to be like Ninja Gaiden, where everyone complains that it's brutally hard, cheap, etc. Mook Chivalry in these games stops you getting overwhelmed and stunlocked as you try and attack. (Or even that Conan game. Where as soon as one enemy hits you they all pile in, and you can kiss half your health goodbye)

They can probably mitigate that with some good crowd-control moves. Like if that "Chainsword Sweep" he does rushing in can take multiple guys out in one blow, or if you can pick a cultist/traitor up and beat the others to death with him.

It just seemed really frigging blatant to me. Seeing the Chaos Space Marine just standing there in a half crouch not doing a damn thing completely broke SoD with me.

If the game's in an early state I wouldn't be surprised if there are animations missing, and when it's finished they'll be moving, taunting, trying to get around you, and generally looking a bit more menacing and dynamic.

Yeah, though the downside to that is that if your crowd control is too good the game just devolves into spamming it at every group. God of War ended up a bit like that against the fluff mobs, because Kratos was just too hard, and even his basic light attack combo had an AoE in it.

It's a fine line on these games between making the fights feel natural and not Early Kung Fu Movie artificial and Dogpile Hell. (Fortunately, with a Big And Ard space marine we shouldn't be getting Ninja Gaiden 2's ridiculous amount of stunlock from gunfire. It didn't even hurt much, just stunlocked you)

Don't most scenarios with chaos cultists overwhelming marines involve dozens of them in a "Swarm of Agent Smith's" scenario? :P. (We will bury you under the weight of our own men. And their knives).

The website is down.

It works for me, although the video is giving me some problems.

Still, I like what I see. The small problems can hopefully be corrected.

Watched half the video on youtube.

Looks like standard mass produced console button bashing crap to me except that the cartoon elf is now a space marine.

Its a pity as I love the idea but it just strike me as five tons of crap which ever way I see it.

I'd like to be proved wrong however and it is in its early stages.

Who are you to demand that things like great AI, realistic physics and challenging combat matter ?

Infinite spawning waves of retarded enemies rushing towards you that you kill with one button press are the apex of game design. Who cares about gameplay ? Why are you living in 1990s. Back then they made an adaption of Battletech boardgames into war simulators more deeper than many flightsims. This is 21st CENTURY dude, games are supposed to be movies. This game is gonna have a real deep Warhammer plot with meanings, philosophy and shit. It's going to bring you to tears with emotions as it brings the boardgame, codexes and novels to life. Only dinosaurs stuck in past care about shit like detailed powerarmor simulation with ability to lose arms and keep fighting, accurate effects of bolter projectiles and sophisticated enemy soldier AI. Who cares about the fact it is a 5 hour movie instead of a game ? It's nex gen entertainment that will be dark, gritty and with lots of shaky cam.
