what the hell is wrong with my memory stick

Ok, this seems like a silly question, but I recently brought a memory stick off ebay. Initially it seemed to have no problems, storing files. Unfortunately it seems some files I have stored are simply corrupted, as they can no longer be opened.

For example, I open a ppt file which works, copy it into my memory stick and it still works. Remove the memory stick after doing all the prompts to allow me to take it out safely. I reinsert it the next within a minute and voila, the file seems to be corrupted as I can no longer open it.

As a rule I do all the prompts to take it out correctly, so what gives.

If you bought a memory stick off ebay, there is nearly a 100% chance it is a chinese fake, which are known to be absolute shit.

They have become quite clever at making faksimiles.

I have bought electronic goods off ebay before from china, namely a portable hard drive, which works fine as far as I can tell. The problem with the memory stick only came to a head when I tried to open a ppt file at work and it wouldn't open.

Yes, the problem only occurs with memory sticks AFAIK. Seriously, it sounds like a typical story. My suggestion is to throw it away.

Ah crap. I go look for another one. Generally I wouldn't have needed a new one from my 500 MB, but my 120 GB portable hard drive is inconvenient to carry around, and I need a memory stick with quite a bit of memory. Power point presentations don't take a lot, but I now have video files (dealing with clinical exam techniques) which take at least 1 GB each.

Ah fuck.
