KDE4: downgrade from KDE3

Seriously, WTF is up with KDE4, especially the launch panel? The new panel is shit compared to the old one; it's actually much less flexible, more annoying to work with in general, and doesn't seem to offer anything to recommend it apart from funky graphical effects. And if I get careless and delete it, it's almost impossible to make a new panel to look just like the old one.

I use Gnome because of the bloat and ever more bizarre decisions taken for KDE. It's a shame, because I loved Mandriva 2005 SE when I used it and related KDE based distros. I guess it's getting worse with their great ideas, poor implementation.

Go Gnome! Could you post some pics to detail your dissatisfaction with KDE?

The "K Desktop Environment". It's one of the leading desktop environments and window managers for Linux. Another is Gnome, and a lightweight one is XFCE.

KDE 4 isn't actually feature-complete despite having a dot-zero version number on it. In fact, the developers said that KDE 3.5 was better for everyday use, and that 4.0 was intended for early-adopters and developers. I'm not even sure if 4.1 is full-featured, for that matter.

I've been out of the GUI Linux loop for a long time, but I've really taken to xfce, myself.

Sounds like the Ubuntu 8.04 team, who shipped with bugs that should've been showstoppers (would two months have killed them? 6.06 was delayed and was the better for it)

Are you thinking about the broken sound server or was there something else I missed?

There was a serious kernel problem as well.

And it sounds like Ibex 8.10 is shipping with KDE 4. I tried the beta live CD and it simply would not boot on my laptop. It had better boot on my laptop and be really usable if I'm going to stick with Kubuntu. Otherwise, I'll be forced to switch to GNOME/Ubuntu. And I don't like GNOME that much.

Tried XFCE yet? Apart from the useless menu editor is a perfectly good desktop environment, and Gnome apps don't look all that out-of-place in it.
