Short Answer: Maybe
Long Answer:It depends on what model of PS3 it is, launch PS3's yes, Launch PS3's had actual Ps2 hardware in them to run PS2 games. Later PS3's have software emulation of the PS2 hardware. But not all PS3's have that software emulation.

Because Sony's a dick, and they needed something besides hard drive size, I/O ports and price to put the various PS3's at the price they are at. Fun fact there have been by my count nine versions of the Ps3 to date. Of which I believe only for play PS3 games.

Only the NTSC 20GB (Model No. CECHBxx) and the NTSC 60GB (Model No. CECHAxx) are backwards compatible via use of the PS2 hardware included within the PS3. The PAL 60GB (Model No. CECHCxx) and older NTSC 80GB (Model No. CECHExx) consoles have software emulation of the PS2 hardware.

So if you're looking to get a PS3 with backwards compatibility, those are the four to look for.

Hum guess I'll have to try when I get home and plug it in. My wife bought me one for my anniversy present :D. Granted she used my money to buy it, so I guess I really bought it for myself.

You might need to make sure that you have the new version of the Dualshock controllers as well, my first attempt to play Final Fantasy XII failed because the game was unable to work with the Sixaxis controller. Final Fantasy VII works like a charm though.

Also, be sure you set up a Virtual Memory Card on the ps3 hard drive before playing a ps1 or ps2 game.
