So Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) was released today, meaning it's time for that semi-annual poll. So how are you installing the new version of Ubuntu?

Already been using it since beta (the one after they fixed the e1000 bug) via upgrade w/ no problems whatsoever. Seems stable enough that I probably won't bother to do a clean install.

Everything was going great until the update manager decided to take a shit. So I tried to run it a second time, but I noticed that there wouldn't be any packages that would be updated, unlike the first time. I said whatever, and carried on. Everything again was going great, until X tried to start after the restart. The two error messages were can't find driver mouse, and can't find driver nvidia. I also can't seem to get apt-get to work properly either (as I was trying to install any nvidia driver). Any help would be appreciated.

If you nuke /etc/X11/xorg.conf it should autodetect the hardware (albeit w/ open source drivers only, like the nv driver), and you can get a GUI to revive everything again. You probably need the nvidia-glx-177 package.

I'm gonna go for it! I've downloaded the 64-bit ISO and am going to throw it on my laptop for the first time ever (the first time I'll be installing Linux period). I currently have Vista Home 64. If anyone has any awesome tips or things to watch out for that will be great.

Depends. I usually downloads the ISO and burn it just in case, then try the update manager. I don't think it's ever worked quite right, though.
Every update I say I'm going to wait 'till the bugs are worked out and every update I end up doing the opposite. This one, I presume, will be no different.

Part of my problem is that it's not detecting my network cards. It also didn't install the latest kernel. I've downloaded the alternate install ISO and hopefully that will do the update.

So apparently, the alternate install disk needs X to be running in order for it to use the upgrade utility (I guess it's a gui program), and since my xserver wasn't working properly, that was a no go. So I downloaded the live cd, and preceded from there. Just reinstalling apps, and I'll be golden.

I normally upgrade through the Update Manager, but by this point my computer's so full of cruft that it'd probably be best to just do a full wipe/re-install. I'm not in a huge hurry, though, since the current version is LTS.

I'll be doing a full reinstall on my Linux box, simply because I can get the ISO download without impacting my download quotas, while using the update manager with any decent Australian mirror (ie. any of them besides the one offered by my ISP, which still isn't bringing itself to the standard needed to become an official mirror), would wreck me for the month.
EDIT: I will however wait for the DVD ISO's to come out. Doesn't look like anyone has them yet for some reason.

I've had better luck upgrading Windows than I have upgrading any *nix distro. It's a frustrating situation. Apparently I'm not the only one with that experience though.

I updated through the Update Manager. It took a few attempts to get everything downloaded due to the server load at the time, but once it had downloaded everything the rest went fine.
Just like last time, several installers paused when asking if I wanted to replace or keep certain configuration files. That was a bit annoying, just like last time. But otherwise, everything seemed to go well.

The Update Manager hasn't come up yet; 8.10 is supposed to be out for Xubuntu, isn't it?
For those who installed it, is it worth the upgrade? Anything interesting?

The new network manager itself is worth the price of admission. Some new features in Compiz, but since you're using Xubuntu, I don't know if that applies.

My interest, she is piqued. Anything on compatibility with older Radeon cards? That killed a few earlier distros for me.

Maybe. A lot of the enhancements that I read about were specifically for Gnome and X11. I know some new NVidia drivers are available (maybe it's my settings, but they don't seem to be working as well as the ones I was using before), but I'm not sure about ATI. I haven't updated my server box (if you can call it that) yet.

Jeez, it's been 6 months already? I never got around to installing 8.04, except for on my laptop. I guess I'll try the update manager on that to see what happens.

Update Manager requires you to install 8.04 first, update everything, then install 8.10. If you skipped 8.04, you're better off just going straight to 8.10 via fresh install.
