Odd RTW vanilla problem: videos broken?

So for some reason the videos in my copy of Rome Total War just decided to up and die. I'm talking about the intro video, the animated menus, the Wonder videos, even the SEGA/The Creative Assembly one at the start. They used to work just fine, but now they don't.
The only thing I can think of is that I installed
Call to Power II recently and that uses a lower form of DirectX. But I've never had an older version of DX overwrite a newer one, and running DXDiag shows that I still have 9.0c installed. Other than that I don't know of anything new that's happened to my computer that could have caused this.
Any ideas? It's not game breaking, thankfully, but it is rather annoying.

Have you tried reinstalling DX9.0C?

Alas, it did not fix the problem.

Have you tried reinstalling RTW itself?
Otherwise, I would ask if RTW worked fine before Call to Power II was installed.

odd problem, I thought I was the only one, but no it's not CTP, it's a wierd thing that seems to happen after a while with RTW sometimes. installing patches sometimes brings them back, sometimes changes to other programs causes them to stop working or patches and they don't come back. has me competly stumped

I'm hoping to avoid that, and it's not such a big deal that I need to.

Yes it did. That very day, in fact.

Glad to know it's not just me then.

Did you by any chance update/change your video codecs or media players?

Nope. The only change I did between the "it works" and "it doesn't work" stage was installing CTP2.
At least, that I know about. If someone else did something (though I'm pretty sure they didn't) I obviously can't tell you about it.

Does CTP2 install any codecs? Does it say anything about it in the readme to CTP2?

it has an older FMV player for the cut scenes that's not compatible with newer generation software.

I think it's the reverse; Call to Power II is a bloody old game, even older than RTW I think.

I've had games destroy codecs (like bik video which is used by a lot of games) on install, you can try installing the
K-Lite Codec Pack - this always helped me when encountering problems like the one you describe. This codec pack (re)installs every codec imaginable, thus fixing any problems broken codecs might give you.

Are they both by the same developer (RAD iirc)? Because that is the solution right there - the older codec probably overwrote the newer one.
