Need help with my Sister's computer

Ok so she's on the East coast and I'm on Arizona, so its a bit hard to remotely diagnose, but here goes:
Windows XP, starts up normally, gets into windows, at that point if they click on anything, or hit any keys on the keyboard, the monitor will blank off like its going into power save mode, if they wait a few seconds it will come back on, or if they cycle the monitor on and off it will come back. They can move the mouse pointer all they want, if they click a mouse button, poof, monitor is off again.
I have a feeling they updated either a mouse or display driver. and I was trying to get them into safe mode, but explaining that is difficult.
Anyone heard or seen this before? Or if you live in Connecticut can you go fix it for me please
