Okay I'm running a wireless network for myself and my housemates at the moment with a Netgear DG834PN and I was wondering if there is any way to, well there's no other way to put this but, basically make sure I get preferential bandwidth over all other users?

The main irritation is when I'm gaming and they're running torrents my latency goes from 54ms to 1k+ms and frankly it's starting to piss me off. I mean I don't want them to have substandard bandwidth, but I'd just like to have a 'reserved' bandwidth space for myself such that I can play WoW without my character taking 2 seconds to begin an action I asked it to.

The deal is I'm connected to the router via ethernet and the rest either connect wirelessly directly to the router, or to an powerline extender the Netgear WGXB102 which is connected to the Netgear XE102 which is connected to the router also via ethernet.

Any help?

You'd need some sort of "Quality of Service" option on your router. Looking it up, it looks like a regular consumer router, and basing my answer off my current Netgear consumer router it looks like you may not have it.

Oh man don't tell me that. It's so frustrating you can't even surf the net when the torrents start. Why they can't do it after say midnight is beyond me.

Check your router's configuration pages anyway. It might be named something like "Bandwidth Filtering" or "Traffic Control" or something to that effect.

Otherwise, you'd either need to get another router with QoS capability or put a separate machine to do the routing and relegate the router to being a switch. Is there a custom hacked firmware for your router out there?

What torrent clients are your family using anyway? I use uTorrent and I can still play games, even with 4-5 torrents running.
