What began as a conflict over the transfer of concionsness from flesh to machines escalated into a war which has decimated a million worlds.

total annihilation fuck yeah

and then starcraft would come out a year later and cement the rock paper scissors model for rts gaming permanently.

ps. when people jerk it to 'user created content' they mean this game.

Edited your title to actually reflect the subject matter. -Lagmonster

to be fair unit balance was pretty horribly broken in TA

I don't know how much better Uberhack was at it but at least it made it slightly better than "spam flash tanks and missile towers -> win"

also it's pretty hilarious when game makers are willing to dick around

the krogoth and the RFLRPCs (how do I still remember the initials for rapid fire long range plasma cannon???) were all intentionally designed to be hilariously inefficient uses of resources

i'd still love to see ARM and CORE ported over to supreme commander

i mean ta had some wacky default units, but a lot of user-made units were hilariously broken. also, it meant that ARM would always win.

also, i mean look at this shit:

editL ignore the weird al crap

Oh yeah. :D

The game was always ridiculous though.

Chris Taylor must have a small penis or something else worth compensating for, though. 6 metre-tall infantry, indeed...

Hell, the Cybrans have a gunship that dwarfs an apartment building! O.o

Core rules supreme, meatsacks. Was playing it again last night. Screw StarCraft, more TA please.

Arm seemed to have better level 1 units. eg) PeeWees/Flashes are alot better than the Core AK and Instigator. But Core had better heavy units.

Plus Core units just look cooler to me.

Being completely insensitive to the issues of balance as I was as a not-very good gaming teenager playing this, I always liked the custom naval units - there was the Core nuclear reactor ship and the Yamato battleship for the Arm. But then I sucked at strategy games at that age... probably still do.

I wish I could find a copy of the War of the Worlds again. As a teenager, I always played that with all the cheats on to keep things working at maximum efficiency and turned research off (so basically it was just a building race between me and the AI) and I unsurprisingly always won due to the moronic 'oh noes, martians blew up our small command centre, all our units blow up in shame' feature. Would love to go back and play it properly.

Arm's lv1 was better. I was quite fond of the Core Storms though.

And while the downloadable stuff was breaking the game a little, you could get a mod that let you distribute them to either side. Yamato fight!

Edit: And the music's great too. Can play the game CDs in a CD player.

I loved how air-to-air units could fire their missiles at ground targets, and ground combat units could (ineffectually) fire at fast-moving air units.

Which of course, leads to me playing a game, where my big bertha is shooting targets across the map, and suddenly, a mess of enemy flying units just explode. WTF? Turns out the Bertha shell got them all. Then I brawler-swarmed.

Oh, and construction aircraft are awesome.

My favourite tactic was to have about 40 Adv. construction aircraft spamming out a creeping line of defensive structures.

'Course, I'd run out of units about half-way there and be forced to have another 20 or so pulling up the rear to make room...

You know what is funny, shooting a nuke into a part of the mad that looks blank, and hitting somebody's large collection of peewees. All by sheer chance.

Isn't that the entire mission of the Intimidators/Berthas? Shoot the hell out of any bits of the map you can't see and see what goes boom.

Of course, given the accuracy, it's pretty much pot luck anyway.

once they racked up a few veterancy levels (5 kills/level) their accuracy started to increase

that said whenever the enemy got one of those up within range of my base i immediately started saving up bombers for a "kill the LRPC" mission

i always loved seeing a tech-3 fighter screaming past a Krogoth at full blast

then the Krogoth just turning its head and obliterating it with its BLoD (Blue Laser of Death)

fuckin' owned

Where can I get the backround music? It is awesome?

I'll find up a copy of that game... somehow.

Inefficient or not, a Buzzsaw (rapid fire lrpc for Core) of mines tracked an adv fighter moving across the map and shot it down with the first round. Yeah, veterancy is hilarious.

Two. Hundred. Peewees.

I still hate you for that.

Timmerman: *launches nukes because he fucking feels like it. Looks up 30 seconds later to the shout of "WHAT THE FUCK MY PEEWEES!?"*

In my defense, it was hilarious.

whats sad to me is that TA actually tried new things which were immediately ignored as soon as starcraft came out

whut units shoot guns at targets regardless of effectiveness? IMPOSSIBLE next you'll want units that don't blindly walk along while getting killed

the actual los thing was cool for using wreckages to neuter enemy defences

and yeah all the hilariously worthless shit you could never build unless your opponent sucked was awesome... except it made nerds say OMG NO FIGHTIN FOR 30M SO I CAN TECH TO KROGOTH PLZ

at least it wasn't boring as shit like supcom

also let's not forget boneyards

i mean okay the "metagame" didn't really mean anything but it was still awesomely fun fluff to accompany the multiplayer

Krogoth is the unliving incarnation of Fucking 0wned, now and forever.

About the only RTSs I lobe as much as TA are Homeworld and Warzone 2100. All of which are quietly ignored in favour of lol starcraft. ¬_¬

Homeworld was some RTS in spaaaaace wasn't it

I never understood why Starcraft was supposed the second coming of Jesus either, I mean it had stupid bulky units that looked so unbelievably "unrealistic" - I mean the whole art style. Ok I guess that's a matter of taste. To me, Starcraft had some cool render videos and that was about it.

And yeah TA was much more awesome with all the huge explosions and wreckage flying all over the place.
