Setting up your own Website...

So I'm pondering creating a website with the vague title of:
www.june1946.com
to detail all the cool stuff that was planned or in the drawing boards if World War II had continued into 1946-47 on all sides (RAF, USAAF, VVS) etc.
However, while buying the webspace is easy. Setting up the website is not. Simple HTML with links like my personal home page
My Page, just won't cut it today. This is 2009, not 1999.
People expect drop down menu bars etc from their websites nowadays...

Try HotDog by Sausage Co (if it's still out there)

What makes Hotdog any better than the basic HTML editor that comes with Open Office for free?

Just set up a Wiki-powered site.

But if Shep is trying to reach a wider audience, some decent design would be called for. It doesn't have to be spectacular, but it could be nice and clean.

I second phong !
Shep can start it. And should people like Skimmer or...STUART occasionally make entries there it could become the[/i[ military wiki.

LOVE the content, Shep! So far, it's 100% true to life!
Seriously, I like the concept and am looking forward to you fleshing out the site.

Oh man, forum rot. There's no reason to have one forum per war, especially not from the very beginning. I've always felt that one of the strengths of this board is that it has grown gradually, with forums added as deemed necessary. Starting out with a large number of forums seems to only dilute a message board. I'd suggest reducing it to one forum per century and requiring that threads about a specific war be labeled, [WW2], [Vietnam], etc. Then if one particular subject has much more discussion than others you can make a separate forum for it. The creation of N&P to take the pressure off OT at the beginning of the Iraq war is a good example.

Before I saw your post, I already had consolidated the VIetnam/Korean/etc forums into "Post 1945"
I guess I can consolidate WWI and WWII + Interwar Period into "The World Wars"

This should be quoted, burned into steel then mailed to every person who even considered making their own internet forum at some point in their lives. Far too many internet forums exist with less than dozen users and three times that number of subforums. If there was a recipe to doom a forum from day one this is the best one.
Seriously MkSheppard should heed your sage advice try to cut down on number of sub forums to just the right amount that will hopefully create a lively board.

I did; I cut down the forums to something more manageable.
EDIT:

You seemed to imply you were looking for recommendations for a Web Editor.
