Home PXE Server

Post by Spyder »

Has anyone here had any luck with setting up a home PXE, or any other OS over network installation method?
Just wondering what OS/software you're using for it.

PING (Partimage is Not Ghost) together with TFTPD32 as the PXE server work pretty well for us at work. They should be fine in a home environment (will run under XP Home) and are both free.

Thinking about it, WINNER may be more what you're after as it's for installing from scratch rather than imaging.

PING is the kind of thing I'm aiming at. WINNER sounds nice but I'd like an option to push down a Linux image as well.

LTSP sounds most interesting. I think I'll have to fire that up on my Linux box and have a play.

Thanks guys.

For most non-Windows systems, netbooting is fairly simple to setup. I use an OpenBSD machine to host netinstalls of Solaris and Centos and my Windows images. Hardest part is making sure the right machine gets the right boot file.
