Game nostalgia: which were your favorite arcade games?

I was trying to make a top 3 but if there are truly two games I have to choose, then these will be it:

Terminator 2: The arcade game

Not only was Terminator 2 easily one of the best movies of the 90's, it also spawned a great shooter in which you had to fend of hordes of terminators and HK's with a plasma rifle of doom! Not an easy game mind you. Actually I loved to hate it (since it costs me lots of quarters).

Daytona USA

Only 3 tracks of which I mostly played the beginner track. A very simple layout but was very fun to play none the less. Not only did it have good graphics and sense of speed but it even had a force feedback steer and a gearbox. It was like driving a real car! (or at least as far as I knew at the age of 14). Great to play against a friend.

So which were those arcade games you're fond to remember during your childhood?

Dirt Dash. A simple 3D racer, but when it's the only video game near you when on holiday, you take what you can get. Controls were pretty good, there was some variety in the cars and it even had a simple damage system.

Time Crisis 1&2.
The House of the Dead (1).
Some machine gun game where you were ina helicopter and the gun shook a lot (made my arms ache for an hour when I was 7).
I was a light-gun whore :). (Fighting games i'd prefer to play at home)

Anyone here ever go to Sonic-world in London back in the "All you can play" days? :)

Street Fighter 2, and pretty much all it's iterations even unto Marvel series. I've spent more time and money on those games then most. I try not think about how many quarters because I know it will be enough to buy a cabinent.

Oh yeah. Always played that one after work (or during work at a calm day) during my student job in an arcade. When you have the key to get endless credits you get pretty good at it :)
Loved the rocking cockpit

I was usually awful at arcade games; But what I did love were the games like House of the Dead where you could haul out a pistol and shoot. I would often pay for both player 1 AND 2 simultaneously and go akimbo, just for fun. It was always more fun than playing with just one gun or with a friend, and people watching thought it was cool as hell.

I used to do that...but got good enough to beat the game that way. My arms hated me for a little while after each of those sessions. :P

I liked Operation Wolf, also, for the short time it was out, Sonic Blast Man (The punch-pad version) and, of course, Star Wars.

I always thought the original Star Wars arcade cabinet was pretty fucking awesome. I wasted a ton of money on that thing. I was also a huge Tekken whore and spent a shitload of time on Tag Tourney. 8)

New Zealand Story. Not because of any particular virtues, although it was an interesting platformer, but because it was the only arcade game available at the sports center where I learned to swim as a child. I put a fair chunk of pocket money into that machine. The old SW cabinet was impressive for the first go but seemed very repetitive to me - not always a bad thing, it works in games like Asteroids, but somehow it didn't for SW.

The Star Wars Arcade Game] from the early 2000s, I think. I'm a total theme park whore (advantage of living 30 miles from them, I guess), and the Disney and Universal parks always had these in their arcades, including the ones at the hotels. I still have pretty much every part of the game memorized to a T.

Mad Dog McCree 2 was one at the Fun Spot, the local fair/arcade down the road. It was where I played my first video games when I was about 2, and I loved this one more than anything. I always felt like I was in a movie when they were live action like this.

Marvel vs Capcom, or Streetfighter, mostly fighting games. My friends hated to play MvC with me because i had a habit of "mindlessly throwing specials out"...but hey it's not MY fault i trained at the fucking game, and i can play more than ONE character instead of some scrub who needs some specific dude to even play! Maybe they'd be better at it if they fucking tried to learn the move sets of the characters and used strategy!

But i'm not bitter or anything.

Daytona USA. I was never very good, but it was hella fun driving the wrong way and trying to ram my friends.

When doing this, the word "REVERSE" would flash on screen. This caused my first seizure, which revealed epilepsy and led to the end of my arcade career.

DEATH, could it be LA Machine Guns? Played that one a few times myself, and it involves a big old gun strapped to the cabinet. While the action generally takes place from a copter. :P

I also played a lot of Crisis Zone, had a MP5 light gun (Heh, with simulated recoil.) and a peddle to push that brough up a riot shield in game and reloaded the gun.

Other than the fun looking light gun games, I tended to stick to the Metal Slugs. Which're all good ways to blow a childhood fortune. :P

That wouldn't happen to have been near Lommel, would it?

If you want to properly play the original Star Wars game, don't play it on a cabinet, play the sit-down booth version. Much better.

The 1990s remake that Sega did was pretty cool, too. Too bad that never came out for any home console.

I remember really liking Double Dragon as a kid, enough that I wanted a Sega Master System rather than an NES since the SMS port of Double Dragon allowed proper two-player co-op play.

Anything King of Fighters, Street Fighter 2, SNK vs. Capcom, and Silent Scope. I think those will always be my all time favourites. I'm going to miss coin-operated video games; I really am. But I guess I won't be too hung up over their passing, emulation's always possible with those old consoles, even now that they can't be bought at retail anymore. Still, I'm going to miss the excitement. I would never play alone, I'd always go to the arcade with pals, and those were good times. Video games were a bit of a social thing for me; things I'd do with friends.

GUNBLADE. Awesome.

My favorite game was Aliens Vs Predator, followed closely by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Afterburner 2, people. I finally completed it on about 300 pesetas some years back. Most awesome achievement in my life.

And now I return to crying myself to sleep.

Raiden. You know, that upward-direction scroll-shooter?

Also, Galaga and Killer Instinct, the latter of which I still have on a like-new functioning SNES.

I think he means Gunblade NY, which LA Machineguns was the sequel to.

My favorites have to be:

Strike Force: Defender on steroids. Made by the same company. Tons of weapons, massive enemies, and a squad of surprisingly helpful space marines. If you were good enough, you could play the game forever: A freed planet could get re-invaded after a while, and you could even intercept the Mook-Making invasion ship (which, by the way, was a bitch to fight).

Total CARNAGE!! Basically Smash TV 2.

Aliens vs. Predator: A classic beat-em-up by Capcom, who refined the art those days.

There was this old martial arts game which every time you win, a bit more of a Chinese girl's costume disappears......anybody remember the game?
