So, my LAN-mates have finally recognized my genius and played GRAW, thus falling in love with it. We've burned through the coop campaign and the coop missions, and I'm contemplating making some new content, set in my home city. So, I've learnt how to use the editor, studied the scripting language and fired up my 3D editor to add new buildings, and have come upon a little snag, I really have no excuse to dump a bunch of tanks, soldiers, and the Ghosts into the streets of Barcelona.
The only constraint I'm setting for myself is to avoid blaming the usual suspects, and maybe have the bad guys be Mercs paid-for by private interests.
So, anyone has any idea of why would it be tactically sound for a military force to attack and terrorize the city?

Re: GRAW2 Coop Storyline Ideas
My working draft right now looks something like this:
-There's some sort of convention/gathering going on, with participants from major countries
-Certain private interests want to sway the results of said meeting, and thus orchestrate military attacks, also hoping to take down some H.V.T.s
-The attackers pose, at first, as some other faction
-The Ghosts are deployed off the record, and their actions help unravel the plot and reveal the true aim of the attacks.
It's not A material, but workable for a shooter, I'm striving to devise a not too contrived reason for a full military attack rather than sporadic terrorist bombings. Or, in other words, I want to justify the pressence of an enemy battallion, rather than resort to the "clowncar terrorist" effect.
I'm not too well versed on military strategy, or even on geopolitical effects of such things, hence this thread. So, suggestions?

Re: GRAW2 Coop Storyline Ideas
Its going to be pretty hard to come up with "A" grade stuff that involves a battalion-level force. I don't really have any much better ideas then you, but here are some points:
Convention - If people are trying to sway the decision, then conventional terrorist attacks would be more effective, less expensive, and less risky.
Capturing or killing VIPs really only require a smallish snatch team, not 500 men.
Only a REALLY big target would actually warrant a major military attack (like, a military base housing very sensitive material, or a general coup if the bulk of the army is indifferent)
I mean, the general storyline is more or less the same as GRAW and GRAW2, so its not like its totally out there, but it also might not come as a surprise to the players (if this part even matters).
Are you intending on making this in the Ghost Recon timeline (2014 or something), or in this reality?
If you wish to go for the coup idea, Shadowy International Organisation offers Ambitious Army Officer a mercenary battalion, and lots of funding and assistance to stage coup, in exchange for High-Tech Thing-a-Majig that the US has recently stationed in Barcelona. Spanish army is almost equally split between Loyalists and Bad Guys, and so are out of the picture. High-Tech Thing-a-Majig would allow Shadowy Internation Organisation to intercept communications (using the power of SCIENCE) in Islamaphobiabadistania. Shadowy International Organisation intends on using this power for Maximum Profit, by selling intercepted communications to the Highest Bidder. So long as Highest Bidder is not, in fact, the US.
Alternatively, Bad Man uses Mercenary Battalion of Poorly Trained Africans to attempt to dissuade Spain from joining International Coalition Against Climate Change Poverty Inflation Ridden Sub-Saharan Economic Shit-Hole.

Shrooms: It's interesting that the taste of blood is kind of irony.

Re: GRAW2 Coop Storyline Ideas
How about this:
-Islamoterrophobia and massive influxes of refugees from Africa and other wartorn regions combine to give hardline Nationalists a strong base, especially following a resurgence of ETA attacks.
-The general elections in the country are fraught with violence as the nationalists initimidate and often use outright violence to affect the polls.
-Electoral results are voided due to breaches of the electoral law/privacy/whatever and the gov't is now facing a split country and the military is sitting in it's bases unwilling to become involved until a clear winner emerges.
-Gov't orders military to quash a Nationalist riot in [whatever city]. Some sections of military comply, others ignore the orders.
-Large sections of the country experience serious violence as police, military and various paramilitary and militias fight for control.
-Ceasefire eventually called and UN Peacekeepers deployed to worst affected areas (incl. Barcelona).
-Talks and eventual treaty to be signed in Barcelona, many diplomats and notables in attendance.
-Nationalist activity increases in the surrounding area and the Ghosts (who have been on standby) are deployed
[MISSIONS BEGIN HERE]
Something like that can give you lots of options for missions as well as enemies. And you can work in the PMC angle if you want (are they really hte bad guys or are they just caught in the middle?). The large numbers of enemies can be covered by a minor civil war type scenario and the large numbers of UN and other forces in the area for the summit.
