I have a simple question to ask all board members, who here is still on some kind of dial up service? Paided 56k? Maybe free add-supported 56k or free 28.8K service or even using an ISDN line? Who here is on few hundred k/b DSL or semi quick Satellite or cheap cable? Or are you on multi-megabyte connections of one type or another?

I connect from my university campus 99% of the time. Even when I'm at my fraternity, the connection there is hosted by the university, and it's fiber optic from the house to campus. Of course, we use Cat5 Ethernet in the house.

 Australia sucks.
I'm pretty sure I have 6mb cable.

Nope, that was me.

Meh. I get 256 kps DSL, but not a bit more. It is quick enough unless I want to download large files, but I rarely want to download anything larger than a few hundred mbs.

3m/b+, and hopefully i'll be able to get more soon when my internet provider starts rolling out a new faster service (just have to hope where I live is one of the places they decide to do it).

From my university I lurk (more often than is probably healthy) through two OC3 connections with 100mbps ethernet. Supposedly they upgraded that to gigabyte ethernet, but I haven't heard any discussion about it and the mechanics of setting up a big network like this are beyond me. Anyway, It's fast enough for a couple hundred nerds to be locked in their rooms playing WoW at once on any given night.

My parents' house is served by Verizon FiOS.

At home I have 8Mb down / 0.5Mb up ADSL. At the office I have 2 Mb down / 2 Mb up SDSL.

I get anywhere between eight and eleven megabit on a DSL line, myself.

Please, let's start posting meaningless pictures with big numbers on them!
Lets not
And I was wondering offhand both if we did have anyone on 56k left on the board and/or how quick people would jump in to do a broad base survey like this one. If people will, that's good information for the future, if not, then that's useful as well.
I'm looking for maximum participation, and if you want to make a post about how fat your pipe is then fine by me. We all know the (South)Korea's win that contest.

I share a 1.5 down, .5 up with another tenant in my building. For the cost it is nice (I pay $10 a month and they pay $15). I tend to not get on until after 2100 local when they are asleep anyway so there is very little overlap.

Now Stark, that's just not fair. I thought these were supposed to be +1 threads for people too timid to post in actual debates, but you're already at +3 and you haven't even answered the survey!

				3.31Mb/s down, 1.46Mb/s up according to speedtest.net.
However, when I'm browsing at home with my old Palm LifeDrive, I'm in the low 200kbps range. Still faster than dial-up, but my handheld likes the 56k board. My wife's iTouch is blazing fast, but she doesn't let me use it

Fiber here. Where I live, it is quite common. I think the service only costs $40/month or something.

10Mbit up/down at home, and 600-1400Kbit max on the Blackberry.

1500/256 ADSL here, not going to upgrade to uncapped ADSL or even care about ADSL2+ - my cap will just evaporate that much faster.

My provider claims 10Mbps down, 0.1Mbps up. I just tried it on speedtest.net and I got 8.45Mbs down, 0.68Mbps up.

Destructionator XIII wrote:I guess this would be like 10 Mb down, 800 Kb up. I bet the Internet companies use the misleading mega/mebi confusion too, so I don't really know. Their numbers are close to worthless.
The entire networking industry works on base-10 since it doesn't care about bytes, only bits. Protocol overhead then takes a good bit out your theoretical throughput.

Just ran a test on the bbs.stardestroyer.net server, using speedtest.net (again). 3.35Mbps down, 3.82Mbps up. Obviously, this is a symmetrical connection, so the download speed is much worse than my personal connection, but the upload speed is far superior.

I'm using cellular broadband which provides up to 1500 KBps down / 256 KBps up. Sometimes it downloads much faster than that, and sometimes I'm doing good to hit 640 KBPs. Such is life far enough out in the middle of nowhere that neither DSL or cable is an option. (That may no longer be true for cable, though. I'll have to check, but it's not like I'm really home often enough these days to be a hardcore interweb user with a need for a 6 MBps internet connection.)

DSLReports says I have 5001 Kbps down, 615 Kbps up ADSL. $35/month, but when that contract expires they'll probably try to stick me with a download cap.

I'm stuck on 56K till at least August due to constraints at work. I work for a university, and one of my projects is behind a separate firewall from the rest of campus. As I can't use both the main campus VPN that 80% of my work requires and the animation VPN at the same time, I dial into the university's modem pool to bypass the main VPN and just use the animation VPN to reach the monitoring apps for those clusters. I'm on call 24x7 so I need to at least keep the monitoring pages for the various clusters I run open all the time.

				3M/768K via Verizon DSL.
If/when I manage to move out, I'll move into a place with access to FIOS, at which point I'll have 20M/20M.
