Duke Nukem Forever Delayed

Post by GrandMasterTerwynn »

forever...
Wired wrote:Report: Duke Nukem Developer Shuts Down

3D Realms, developer of Duke Nukem Forever, has been shut down, according to a report by Shacknews.

The gaming site said Wednesday evening that a “very reliable source close to the developer” has confirmed that the studio has been shut down, and employees let go, due to “funding issues.”

Shacknews has not yet received a statement from 3D Realms, but got a statement from Apogee Software and Deep Silver, developers of the upcoming Duke Nukem handheld games, that said they were “not affected by the situation at 3D Realms.”

This, of course, confirms that there is indeed a situation. The full story will likely emerge soon as Shacknews gets official confirmation on their anonymous tip.

In development since 1997, Duke Nukem Forever has become the game industry’s longest-running piece of vaporware by a good country mile, winning many Wired.com Vaporware Awards. Could this be, at last, the death of Duke?
Upon seeing this news story, the opportunity to post an article with the above title simply couldn't be ignored. Mind you, this isn't yet official.

They're still in the running for this year's vaporware awards.

Update: The situation has been all but confirmed following an official statement from a studio representative that reads "Deep Silver and Apogee Software are not affected by the situation at 3D Realms. Development on the Duke Nukem Trilogy is continuing as planned."

This was as inevitable as an execution. Looks like the scenario Uraniun described in this thread came true.

My personal reaction consisted of a kind of laughter difficult to convey through text.

I'm actually sad. Now we can't use the phrase 'Duke Nukem Forever twin pack' to describe a delayed game!

I can't resist making this joke: was it "Duke Nukem Forever, Delayed" or "Duke Nukem Forever Delayed?" Well now that that's out of the way, let's move on to see if Blizzard will bring us Starcraft Ghost. Who wants to bet that won't happen? Any takers?

I'm pretty sure Blizzard outright canceled that long ago so it doesn't actually count for the 'LOL never coming out' awards.

Just think, there were people getting paid for TEN FRAKKING YEARS to make this game. Ten years. To do, going by appearances, absolutely nothing.

That's a sweet gig.

If it ever does come out, I'm buying a ski pass in hell. Sisyphis must have carved a sweet half-pipe by now.

Blizzard said it was on ‘indefinite hold’ in 2006 while it looked at changing development from Xbox/PS2 to the new consoles. That's never gonna happen since it would mean making a whole new game from scratch, and no news at all has come out since then.

Duke Nukem Trilogy is a set of platforming games that Apogee are working on; they have nothing to do with Duke Nukem Forever. Take-Two might restart the project with a different developer, but there's no way in hell they're gonna keep the same title for fear of looking like a laughing stock, so I think we can safely consign Duke Nukem: Did Not Finish to the history books.

Although I still think that was a funny post, it seems I gave Broussard & co. too much credit; the stories I'm hearing seem to indicate that that there actually was development going on at 3DRealms, they were just so colossally incompetent that they couldn't get a finished product out.

I'd like to know hos much development was actually done, and how many 'versions' the company had somewhere.

Depending, someone could buy all that up, rights and all, and have 10 Duke Nukem titles that could be finished as a 'Duke Nukem Forever' set, and 'Go for the Retro gaming feeling'

If Only I have 50 million dollars to try this with... sigh.

(Then again, I hear for 50 million, I could buy Wizards of the Coast instead)
I've been asked why I still follow a few of the people I know on Facebook with 'interesting political habits and view points'.

It's so when they comment on or approve of something, I know what pages to block/what not to vote for.

I take that to mean they might ressurect the project at a later date. Looking at the gameplay video from Ghost I htink Blizz made the right move there. It looked like shit.
