Some youngsters remember it too. I've switched over from 2 a while ago, it's perfect if you have ten minutes to kill. Still waiting on a version that has easier macro support for loading torps, but hey, a graphical overhaul and colour!

Splitting your fleet to go after the weakest shop, capturing it and using it as a kamikaze never gets old.

For those of us who haven't played every video game since mankind got the idea of taking controllable string puppets and making them fight in a box with a hole cut in the side, would you mind explaining what the game is about, whether it's good, whether the learning curve is ten minutes or "if you don't know how the source code works, you can't so much as turn around", whether it's anything different from half a dozen other 2d space games...?

It's a really old 2D space combat game based very loosely on Star Trek. Apart from the radar screen it's entirely text-based; you select which ships make up your fleet, which ships make up the enemy fleet, then give one command per turn to the crew of your flagship. Commands include navigation; arming, aiming and firing of weapons; special manoeuvres like boarding and docking; damage control; and giving general orders to the rest of your fleet.

When you're done (either by killing anything that isn't on your side or because you got bored) you end the simulation and are graded, based on your performance as well as the odds of you successfully completing the battle which are given at the start. Lousy odds = better rating.

The learning curve is fairly shallow provided you print a copy of the manual, since there's a boatload of text commands and the in-game help is a bit sluggish to use.

It's actually quite stunningly pathetic it took sixteen years to get to this point. Given modern computers and engines (and arguably languages) you'd expect someone could have bashed that up in a weekend, and made it more functional.

Oh wait, nerds.

What's REALLY lame is it runs in Vista with a custom window appearance!

So tell us Stark:

How many games where the original sourcecode was lost have you reverseengineered lately that lets you sit on a pedestal and denigrate this game? From your sentence, I can deduce that you're a retarded fuckhead who has no clue about game programming whatsoever.

Oh yeah sorry, I forgot you can't comment on nerd pillars without being some superman coder yourself. Just like in real life? Grow up. People have rebuilt far more complex games from the ground up in their spare time, it's not my fault this is so uninspiring. I wasn't aware I needed to meet the Julhelm Standard of Programming Demonstration before I could laugh at crap games. I'm really sorry I hurt your feelings by saying a mean thing about your pet game.

Demonstrate how I'm 'on a pedestal' and why it's wrong to 'denigrate this game'. Does preferring trek73 add or reduce my nerd cred? More to the point, if their goal is to meet the Begin 2.0 functionality, that is BY DEFINITION uninspiring and old-hat, so what's your problem?

If you have nothing positive to add Stark, why not leave the thread to people who do enjoy the nerd game? We get it - nerds bad, you good. We accept that. Now can we please have a thread where you don't jump in and derail things with your mocking [which would be cute if this wasn't a nerd sci-fi forum].

As for the game, thanks for posting the link, I remember this from years ago and it was a fun game. However I am getting a nasty error when I try and start the game - a box comes up saying Error 100012 and that's it - it just exits to desktop. Anyone else get that/know a workaround?

Thanks.

Grow a fucking spine. Where the fuck you go this inane idea is beyond me. How do you expect people to respond to a massively niche game that has barely progressed in sixteen years and was primitive even then? If you honestly think the only valid answers are 'ignore it' or 'love it to bits with tongue in anus action', fuck off and die. At least trek73 has the excuse of being older than jesus.

I want you to tell me I can't laugh at crap games, so I can troll every thread about a game where anyone says anything negative.

I haven't had any errors; if nothing else, it seems quite portable (running as it does without a problem on Vista64). Did you extract the skins nonsense too?

Not by turning it into another 'lol fatty nerds i'm so much better' Starkwank-a-thon? It's an old game, people forgot about it, the original author came across it a few months ago and thought "let's port this to Windows". Tell me where this is a crippling failure of humanity again?

As if your constant bashing of everything isnt demonstration enough as it is? Tell me again why anyone here should regard your opinions as anything other than noise with no substance. The fact of the matter is: Someone took the time to make this game and port it to windows. They've made something; you haven't, as far as I know, so tell me again where you get the authority to bash this work as "pathetic"?

Awww, Stark is an angry hater guy! Fuck you Stark!

I think I'll give this a try, thanks for the link, Shep.

Way to rape ebert's law up the ass there. Since when does someone have to do something better to know that it's not worth jizzing wildly to?

Thanks for bumping this for me Zod. He really honestly said it! I honestly nearly can't believe anyone could say something so stupid.

But he's MADE some emotional arguments and fallacious arguments. What gives me the AUTHORITY to have an opinion?

Man even MOCKING that spineless attitude makes me feel stupider. The high note is that he claims nobody considers my opinion worthwhile SIMPLY BECAUSE HE DISAGREES WITH ME. :)

Heh, I didn't even realize how old Julhelm's post was. I just saw Phant bump the thread and peeked in; otherwise I probably would have overlooked it completely since the thread title is so useless. :)
