Return to Conan '09

For free Flash and I will play any kind of shit, so we went back into Conan recently. It is indeed improved from lauch (not really hard) but the whinging is utterly hilarious.

We are informed that PvP is now 'ruined', because there are actual guards in NPC settlements and you can't gank people using vendors anymore. The 99% of the zones with no guards are not relevant. This is more amusing because people KEEP TRYING TO KILL YOU IN NPC TOWNS, even though they get instantly one-shot by guards. Solution - idiots lurk outside the gate and try to kill people, but stealth is still broken so you can easily avoid it.

The game has also been ruined as many of the early-game clothing items are no longer transparent. This is apparently a massive RP problem.

Demos and Necros are now 'broken' because they can't kite every other class in the game and get 3x scores on the minigames.

More seriously, they've messed with the feat trees and the way stealth works, so different playstyles are possible now (of course this means every class is now 'broken' or 'imba' depending on whether you use it or get killed by it). The engine is much nicer and more efficient (although dx10 runs 18 fps on Flashes 260, lol) although it still locks up when entering/leaving busy areas (which are now protected by NPC guards so it's no biggy). The 'murder' system seems to work pretty well (although it's apparently still bugged) and the guards allow the vast majority of the game to retain the drive-by-ganking flavour (which I like) while shutting down the constant res-plate camping (which was fucking stupid). I'm too low level to comment on the itemisation changes.

Crafting is still a high-level thing (50 i think) which is stupid, but levelling appears faster. Flash and I knocked over 5 quests the other day and I got two levels, which is much faster than previously. A lot of the lameness is gone, but the constant free PvP is still there, so balance issues and things like stealth and murderpoints not working properly aside I'm having a good time. Has anyone else reactivated?

I don't play on a PvP server, so I can't really comment on how city guards have "ruined pvp" , but I can say they respond pretty violently to errant weapon swings and spells. For a while, if you declared for a siege on another guild's battlekeep, you would be able to fight them in open world pvp. This caused some hilarious instances where we were battling another guild in the streets of Khesatta while dumbfounded bystanders looked on, wondering why they couldn't participate in the carnage. Unfortunately, that feature was removed after much complaining. That being said, mini-games and 1 v. 1 duals in the Cimmerian border kingdom are pretty active. Sieges are still laggy as fuck, but I had a blast when we sieged the "top dog" guild on the server last Saturday. I don't have a Bear Shaman leveled, but one guy in my guild has continually griped how his shaman has been "neutered" in pvp, although they're still needed as raid healers.

You can take up a crafting profession (armorsmithing, alchemy, etc.) at level 40, and you can start farming materials from nodes at level 20. The numerous world drop recipes have made crafting a bit more worthwhile, although raid gear is still better, but the way raid gear drops can keep you waiting for awhile. Today's patch (1.05.3) expanded the loot tables of the raid bosses quite a bit, apparently because Tier 3 raids are almost ready to go live, and people will need to be heavily geared to get through it. That's just a rumor I heard, so take it with a grain of salt.

The last big patch (1.05) changed the game a lot, and I've heard a lot of assassins griping, although they got some love in 1.05.3. Gear now makes much more of an impact on your character's performance, and raid weapons and shields are no longer class-specific, which has caused some interesting episodes in raids, particularly when a guardian in one of our raids lost his mind when a ranger shield dropped.

The idea of playing Conan on a PvE server just blew my mind, sorry. :)

Did you ever stop playing? Three months was the max for me paying for a game so obviuosly broken and unfinished as it was at launch.

I'm a wuss.

Yeah I stopped playing for awhile, due to a combination of real life issues and being frustrated with the game. I went back a few months ago when I heard that the game had been much improved, and caught on with a pretty good raiding guild. I'm mainly hoping to see the inside of Thoth-Amon's Stronghold before the game gets its plug pulled.

Just for fun here's a screenie of my ranger standing in front of the door to Black Ring Citadel.

I think I would have quit a lot earlier without drive-by PvP. The PvE is pretty dead boring 20-30.

Out of curiosity, what server are you on, and what class/classes have you tried?

I've tried conqs, sins, ranger, hox, and tos. I don't really like the casters and I hate pet classes. The hox and conq are the only ones I've leveled very far, and they're only ~30, they're both fun. I'm on Tyranny, Bloodspire (not that being 'oceanic' makes any difference to the massive latency) and my two rogues got moved to Cimerria (apparently an RP server so I haven't logged them yet).

Ah, level 30, so you probably haven't even made it to some of the new content that they have rolled out since launch. They even gave Black Castle a nice face lift.
