Game opinions

I would like to get opinions on several games that have come out recently in reguards to replayability, ease of use, and just plain fun. :D

Dead Space, Demigod, Space Siege, Red Alert 3, Fallout 3, and Dawn of War 2.

Deadspace is easy, boring and not even remotely scary. If you like RE you'll love it!

Demigod is a decent MP game that was totally crippled by it's poor launch. I own it, I play it, it's fun... but I'm not sure enough other people do to make multi fun for long.

Space Siege is utterly appalling Diablo crap. Play Diablo, Titan Quest, Sacred, anything else.

RA3 is the worst RTS in years.

Fallout 3 is easy, linear, spotty, boring, and one of the best adventure games in years.

DoW2 is easy, linear, interesting but poorly structured, and has multi that is basically totally different to single player. Depends how much you like 40k/DoW1/etc, SP isn't replayable.

RE: DOW2. If you're an achievement whore, you should know that you can't actually get the campaign completion achievement due to a glitch, unless they've fixed it since I stopped playing.

I know Stark was trying to get someone elses save so he could beat the campaign without having to replay the whole thing. Did you ever pull that off?

I haven't played RA3 or Dead Space, but if the opinions others have voiced about them here are half correct they aren't worth buying.

Fallout 3 is fun to play, but Stark is right when he says it's easy. VATS is basically a giant "I Win" button, so it's slightly more challenging if you try to play it like an FPS, but I've only been killed a couple of times when I was horrendously outnumbered. I haven't tried either of the expansions for it.

Deadspace is atmospheric, and has a lot of 'ZOMG A GUY JUMPED OUT OF A CLOSET AND HE HAS NO FACE'. But it's so predictable, that the instant you enter a well lit room with open spaces, you realize that in exactly five seconds, an alarm will sound, all the lights will break and monsters will appear. Also, I called the twist ever since seeing the damned opening movie. I found it a decent run through though.

RA3 is awful.

Fallout 3 was fun before you stuck to the main plot. And if you pretended that the better quest chains in Fallout 1/2 didn't exist. And if you don't think too hard about how stupid easy VATS makes the entire game's combat.

I could recommend Prototype---I mean, [Prototype] if you feel like being a psychotic freak who can't act at all consistantly. And with absurdly large plot holes and omissions. It is however, very fun for a while.

Yeah, some 'do all missions' thing was impossible to do in my game of DoW2, and saves are locked to XBL profiles so BCG giving me his didn't help. BAH! :)

This is very common these days - games that give away their 'twist' in the goddamn intro (like FEAR). [Protokite] at least had a twist that wasn't signposted (it just didn't mean anything either).

Dead Space on the 'Impossible' difficulty is about equal to GoW2 on 'Hardcore' or Halo 3 on 'Heroic' (solo), but more consistent. Unfortunately you have to play through on a lesser difficultly level first to unlock it. It does take a while to get used to the mechanics, but not a whole playthrough. The gameplay design on Dead Space is very good, which is actually what makes it kind of bland - I didn't notice any quirky excursions from the difficulty curve the way there are in most shooters. The setting feels like its had a lot of effort put into it, but the actual game is a giant, shameless cliche-fest, and the complete devotion to 'playability' (e.g. you only find ammo for the weapons you are currently carrying, everything gameplay-relevant glows brightly, the completely accurate map/path display and lack of redundant areas means you never have to explore) kinda kills the immersion. The graphics and sound design is nice though, for a claustrophobic corridor shooter.

RA3 is indeed horrible. Too easy even on hard - in fact the game's actual difficulty is having the determination not to walk away in disgust at the stupid, endlessly annoying game mechanics. Pretty much every good bit of the original Red Alert has been stomped on until it expired. The only fun thing about it is the cutscenes, and that's mostly just Tim Curry.

On the subject of game impressions, has anyone here played Far Cry 2? I was thinking of getting either that or CoD4 once I am done messing around with GoW2.

RA3:

If you want to look at models dressed up in pathetic revealing uniforms giving you briefings then this game is awesome. *HACK*

If your a fan of old style C&C like Red Alert 1 then you definetly wont like this, it is completely non-serious and predictable. The gameplay is dumbed down to basically being Spam n' Conquer with lots of goofy special abilities for you to micromanage till your fingers bleed from annoyance. The graphics are cartoony with the units looking like pathetic bathtoys and the feel of it being a game for small children. Not the same kind of game like Tiberian Dawn which showed Kane blowing people's brains out in front of you or Red Alert 1 with cinematics that felt like a plausible situation rather than a big running gag.

Although if you do intend to buy it, the expansion can only be bought online from what I recall and essentially adds fuck all except more single player garbage with more models and little content.

Fallout 3

The base game is linear and easy however the adventure is truely epic and it gets better with the extensive modding community for the game. There are expansions being released although the recent ones have been garbage, the ones coming seem to be the ones people are most looking forward to. With mods it can be highly replayable and fun to 'mess around' in.

RA3 had one good moment. ONE.

Tim Curry: "You won't have the satisfaction of catching me. I'm going to the one place... that hasn't been corrupted by the touch of capitalism... (dramatic pause) SPAAACE!"

Ok, you saved me from buying RA3 Premier Edition, even though it was only $13.00 and unfortuneatly I already bought Space Seige for $5.05

The others I all have and am looking foward to playing over one my system gets built.

Oh, and if you can advise about any other games that would be worth playing on a PC offer your favorities.

RA3 went way beyond the bar of RA2 from being fun but funny to fucking annoying and stupid. The Rising Sun and their nano-cyborg shit that is disturbingly close to Transformers is a frustrating gimick that has no real place in RA although the acting was actually better in their cutscenes. No doubt because they actually HAVE a fucking actors in the scenes and not models dressed up as lovedolls for drooling idiots.

Watching Gemma Atkinson desperatly fighting that oh-so short miniskirt in every scene rapidly got annoying and the general attitude of turning a once respectable RTS wargame into a suger coated pile of shit with pretty faces selling it to the masses is unforgiveable.

Christ buddy, nobody cares about your fanboyish ranting. RA3 was horrible, everyone agrees, lets move on. And not, y'know, rant about how it raped your childhood and you're scared of women.

Starglider, Impossible is only hard because they reset your shit; since you've learned all the guns are worthless you can quickly spec up the pistol and it's easy again. It's pretty sad that buying a gun cuts your ammo in half and significantly increases the game's difficulty. Turns out they never thought it out?

Yeah, Dead Space only had two weapons worth using out of like 9. The starter pistol is the most accurate, longest ranged, highest damage weapon possible. And then later, you get a push-over shotgun/grenade launcher which is only for 'OHSHIT, POINT BLANK ENEMIES' moments. That silly gun is totally for peaceful industrial purposes, totally. Girders need proximity grenade launchers as part of their manufacturing process.

Oh, and the only weapon in that hole game that isn't literally a ridiculously unsafe industrial tool is a military gatling laser assault gun. Which is worthless and the worst weapon. Hilarious.

And if you buy the military rifle, your supply of actual effective 3-shot kills is instantly cut in half! It's brilliant in it's simplicity. Helicopter mode is really useful too.

Totally! I forgot about Helicopter mode. It's as if some guy in military procurement went...

"You know what? Our soldiers carry too much ammo and we need to use it up faster for budget purposes. We need to design a bulky gun that resembles a car muffler without a stock, has three weak completely superfluous gatling barrels, and has the ability to fire wild bullets in every direction. Brilliant."

Also anyone have an opinion on Lost Planet?

And we should have a games list for PC on some of these to keep noobs like myself from buying stupid games.

Lost Planet is Metroid for people who don't own a console (or appreciate quality). If you like bland graphics, mechs and 8-bit bosses, I'm sure it'll be great fun!

If there was a 'games list' it would almost instantly deteriorate into every idiot posting a list of every game they ever played and declaring them 'quality'.

What we need is a thread where the four or five people on SDN with rational opinions give pros and cons, not more 'look how cool I am I like this game' crap.

Helicopter Mode.

It's so awesome, that the three or four times it's demoed in that video, you can see just how effective it is.

In Deadspace you can fire the weakest per-shot gun in the game in a mode where the three barrels spin over your head like a helicopter, delivering a light shower of worthless bullets in all directions, into walls, light fittings, doors, vent covers and occasionally a badguy. Since they all need one thousand bullets to kill, this is suboptimal (and looks really really dumb).

Dead Space is not even worth a rental. Trust me - I rented it.

Demigod I only know of because of STRAK, and I trust his opinion implicitly, so I assume it's a fun romp, but no single player, so that kills it for me.

SS - Poo. Don't even look at it.

RA3 - what can be said that hasn't already been said?

FO3 - must-own game. But do yourself a favor and get it on console, IMHO. others will argue that graphics make it better on PC, but since I played it on console first, it ruined me. I tried it on PC and I just don't "get it". Also, the mod system is insanely difficult to get to work so it's just plain better on console.

DoW2 - No idea. But since it's 40k it's poo. QED. ;)

The two weapons I liked were the cutter and the line gun. The line gun is at least as good, if not better for short range crowd control as the force gun (once upgraded), and you can also use it to cut all three tentacles off those baby things in one shot, or take the legs off three enemies at once if they're running down a corridor towards you.

The most aggressively useless weapon was the flamethower (range? damage? visibility? ammo capacity? who needs them!), just edging out the contact beam (a sniping weapon, and a horrible one at that, in a game that has about one opportunity to snipe in its entire playthough). The pulse rifle was weak but at least it worked reliably on every enemy in the game, as long as you kept your distance.

I have it for PS3. The missions are virtually all the same (drive to x, kill y), the baddies are either idiots (those driving vehicles continually commit suicide by coming at you in the exact same way or drive over their own men) or super-elite snipers that can see you coming for miles, the money system is fucked (your basically geo-caching for diamonds) and unlocking weapons involves hitting convoys of the dealers, the weapons degrade very fast and there's endless walking or driving.

That said, I enjoy it and keep going back to it. Just be warned that unless they've fixed this glitch that it's possible to play to 88% and not be able to progress. You'll know which mission it is when you get to an expat bar to meet the reporter and you can't get in. I managed to solve it by actually walking up to the missions target and shooting them rather then lobbing a grenade through the door.

FarCry 2 thread

As to CoD4, it's a bit of a "meh" game. Some levels are amusing and enjoyable (C-130 mission, the USMC campaign), others are just grindfests ("run down the hill, while hordes of enemies are coming up the same hill and get to the chopper", or "wait for the chopper to arrive, while fending off a horde with another sniper (who's wounded)"). The multiplayer is alright, the only thing I have a problem with is the "Killcam" (a replay of how you were killed), some of the perks (ie Juggernaut), and the ACOG "upgrade".

Oh, and watch out for the attack dogs.
