USB drivers?

I'm trying to get my PC to detect a fucking portable HD - it does, but then insists I don't have the drivers for it to work properly. I'm wondering what it is - could it be the drivers for my USB? If so, where the hell do I get updated ones? Everything else i plug in the bloody thing works, so i dont see why this is a problem.

EDIT: works fine from the back USB ports, not the ones on the front. WTF?

Are your front USB ports even connected to your motherboard?

Well, have you ever connected anything USB-related in the front side ports and if so, have they ever worked?

Does the HD have its own power supply, or is it one that's powered by the port? On some cases the front USB ports don't always provide enough juice for certain devices to work properly, or at all.

Try this. Assuming you're using Windows, go under Control Panel > Device Manager. Scroll down to Universal Serial Bus controllers and expand it. Uninstall anything labeled "root hub" and reboot. When you start up again the OS should re-recognize your ports and the HDD should be recognized. 90% of the time that does the trick.

I had a similar problem with my mouse except it would only work with one USB port in the front. I think I managed to fix it by flashing the BIOS. All I know is that after doing that, I was able to connect the mouse at the back USB ports.

Does your portable hard drive work properly in other computers?
