Dm situation question.

Post by Isolder74 »

i am currently running a Star Wars game with some friends, and I have one player who plays a bit crazy. He's a bounty hunter(Star Wars fighter basically) and he has got an odd need to collect guns. Gurrently he has 1 medium Repeating Blaster with added bayonet, Two Pistols, A stun net launcher, 2 knives, a Vibrosword, 3 Hold Out Blaster(Star Wars Derringer.)

Well in the last game he managed to talk his way into an black market armor shop and rather then look at everything the shop keeper had he simply bought the Durasteel plate suit that was the the most expensive thing in the shop and the first thing the shopkeeper offered him. I had the keeper ask several times if he'd like to look at anytghing else but nope he wanted the shiny metal set.

The irony is that he left a cheaper and actually better(stats wise) suit of armor in the shop because he did this. The keeper made a killing of course.

This player has a habit of complaining about said things and this is what worries me. The rest of the group knows about the shop now thanks to him and if any of them buys something there after looking at everything on the wall he's bound to find out about about the set he didn't buy.

How should I respond to him when he starts complaining about not getting the best armor in the shop?

Tell him he had a chance to look at other stuff, multiple times and refused. Now someone else decided to actuallly look around and found it.

His loss.

They are likely not to buy the suit and the shop keeper isn't going to let him back in.... he's made his profit on him.

It is in character for the black market shop keeper. Of course he showed off the most profitable piece first. He's out to make money after all. After making the sale of the month why would he take back the set to make less money. This was a black market place so no refunds is the rule.

He did have a chance but didn't take it.

Oh, I misunderstood you.

Still, I don't know why he wouldn't let the guy buy anything else.

Unless he fears for his life if the man is allowed in. That'd make sense.

He spent all his money on the set, to buy the better one the character would have to sell the current one. This shop keeper won't play with that. His only option is a different place that is not to be found ATM.

Was this shop on a very busy planet? If so, then just take that item out of the shop and say it was sold before the group made it back. If it was that good, you could even make it that it was baught by a rival bounty hunter and make it a short side mission, or make it a solo for him. Its your Galaxy, your story, so if anyone has a problem they can stfu and roll.

It is a busy planet. It is Greedo's homeworld and at the moment the area is inundated with bounty hunters as there was recent jailbreak.

Cool, so this wildcard, Wild Carde, caused a major jailbreak to get some business, collects some reward, buys teh awsoms armor. Now, the local ISB agent or whoever is on to his/her/its act and hires your guy to get him, alive if possible, dead just as good. the only thing is, the suit wants to further his own career, so no public fights. And the jucy? Only a force user could have broken through all that security alone alone......
This will allow him or another party member to get the good stuff (assumig not thermal detonators are used) and will be a fun story.

Oh, and Wild Card is a gun wielding super hottie :angelic:from another game and she has a very bloody history, so do her proud if you want to use her.

Congratulate him on excellent roleplaying of horrible character flaws (in this case, short attention span and/or compulsive purchase disorder :) ).

Wouldn't she find male plate armor uncomfortable?

Well this jail break was caused buy a Gran who was a mass murderer who broke out everyone else to cover his escape. The Gran is a master boxer with an ax to grind with our bounty hunter.

Why not just have the shop keeper offer to buy it back at a small fraction of the original cost and accept nothing less?

Oh, come on. He's a black market dealer: He moved the armor (which is presumably illegal or was acquired illegally), so the buyer can now fuck off. No technical support available, either.

If the guy insists, the dealer may think he is a cop, though, which opens some possibilities :)

If the player characters are aware of this bounty hunter's... ahh, issues... maybe they shouldn't tell their fellow PC about said better armors? ;) That's some good plot hooks by the way I'm seeing here.

The problem is that only works if they go to the shop on a day we play that he isn't there. If he ever is present when I read off the stats or write them down, I suppose I could put them in a sealed envelope, he will make a fuss. The problem isn't the character it's the player himself. He constantly questions my judgement calls and has actually forced me to be stricter on the rules then I'd usually be when I fudge them because they get in the way of fun, hence why I do a critical fumbles every natural 1 now(because that's the rule), and forces me to have to explain everything.

Example;

He catches a convict and rolls very badly on the roll to lock him up.

The convict gets out of the cuffs and gets away.

He demands how.

I say he picked them. [or you didn't lock them(doesn't buy so I'm back to <--)]

Where did he get the pick? [or he found a paper clip etc (see above)]

But I searched him! Where did he hide it. and so on!

Frustrated: Out of his ass......

What version of SW is this?

Does he have perception skills and/or weapons/armor knowledge skills?

If yes to the former and you want to be nice, roll a perception. If he passes, tell him something catches/caught his eye as he left. If he has the latter, roll it, and explain that while the armor he bought may look shiny, its really a collectors piece and not as functional as something else.

Can do the same if he has Barter type skills as well.

You're being a grot in the above example. If the player fumbles the roll, then it is his character that fucks up the action- the convict doesn't magically get superhuman abilities to get out. The player is perfectly correct to ask for an explanation of a far-fetched and unlikely event, IMHO.

A better explanation would be, "you forgot to check the lock, which didn't snap shut properly. The convict simply took off the cuffs and walked away."

Have a very nice day.

Why would you even care to explain? "You have no idea" is a perfectly reasonable explanation, since if the PC fucked up the action, he won't immediately know what went wrong, either.

...Why is there even a roll to "lock him up" (very vague, btw) in the first place. Last time I checked, there wasn't a roll to slap cuffs (even stun cuffs) on a person.

If the guy was struggling, it's quite justified. Slapping cuffs on a person who's actively trying to resist is not easy.

So? The dealer can still demand to inspect the armor first, checking for bugs and/or traps, buy it back at a fraction of the price, then sell it to some other dupe for double the profit, there are plenty of other suckers in the galaxy. Like you said, he is a black market dealer, thus profit would be one of his main, if not the main motive behind his actions.
