Mirror's Edge for PS3: 720p issue

I am wondering if anyone else has this problem: when trying to display the game at 720p, which the box says it can go up to, the screen is split; i.e., there are two vertical lines splitting the screen so that you're seeing the game three times: The screen splits into three. So you're seeing the game three times on the same screen, and there are two vertical lines separating them. However, the game displays just fine at standard resolution.

I did a search and it seems several people have had this same issue, but so far I'm unable to find a solution. Maybe if I update the PS3 software, it will help. I'll have to wait for my sister to come home so I can borrow her USB drive, though, since I don't have the PS3 hooked up the Internet yet.

Any ideas? Anyone else here had a problem with a game displaying a split screen on your PS3?

Updating the PS3 software would be advisable. I originally rented Mirror's Edge on the PS3 and don't remember running into that issue despite having a 720p TV.

I think it may not be just a problem with the game because I experienced a similar problem testing the resolution via the PS3's Display Settings. Oddly enough, though, I don't come across this problem with 480p or 1080i (the highest res my tele, an RCA D52W20 HDTV, seems to supports). Also, I'm using PS3 component cables (by Gamestop), and I was playing MGS4 on 1080i without any issue.

Component cables? Ick. Invest in some HDMI cables; you can pick up cheap ones for like $5 off Amazon. That might well be your problem right there, because not all games will run the same over component.

Hm. Then I got another question. My tele doesn't have an HDMI connection, but it does have a DVI for HD. Should I invest in a DVI to HDMI converter cable and an HDMI cable? Or does the conversion ruin the point? Also, I noticed, when searching HDMI cables, that some are referred to as "male." Do I have to worry about what "type" (i.e., male or female) the converter cable and HDMI cables are?

Sounds like you've got a seriously older model HD set then. A DVI to HDMI converter cable like this one should be fine then, or anything else similar, as long as they're both male ends. But ultimately it definitely seems like it's the cable's fault for the video weirdness. No need to get a pure HDMI cable unless you plan on upgrading your set anytime soon.

Thanks for the info, Zod.

Just updated the PS3. My sister lost her USB drive so I just converted the update file to an ISO and burned it using CDBurnerXP. That said, the updates had no effect on my problem, though; that narrows down the possibilities. I'm going to try hooking up HDMI, in any case.
