Computer issue

As I was connecting to the Internet the most bizarre glitch occurred. The monitor shifted to a red screen with a black border. I could access my monitor settings but nothing else, forcing a reset. From what I've been able to determine this is a Red Screen of Death error. I'd never even encountered or heard of something like this before today. I'm hoping that it was only a one-off, but you can never tell. What could be the cause of this problem?
My system specs are as follows.
Operating System: Windows XP Professional SP2
Processor: Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.40 Ghz, 1 GB RAM
Mointor: HITACHI CM828 CRT
Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 2400
