Looking for a PS1 tank game

Post by Haruko »

I remember playing this PS1 game in the late 90s. For the whole game, you're in a tank fighting other tanks, as well as flying units and base defenses. If you reached a certain platform, you could instantly create your own citadel (a tall defensive structure) and two turrets. For one mission, you would have to defend that citadel and two turrets against ground and air assaults. In two other missions, you have to defend a large hovering vehicle against attacks. I also remember that there were three factions, one of which is allied with you early on in the game, but switch sides later on. The faction allied to you, by the way, had its units painted green or yellow, while enemy units were painted red... if memory serves.

Anyone have ideas as to what games this may be? I've tried searching for it a while now, but in vain.

What keywords did you use, by the way?

Heh, I wouldn't know about Battlezone, since I haven't played it, but Uprising X is certainly nothing special. As a Gamespot reviewer pointed out on Amazon: "The gist of Uprising X's story is one that we've heard a million times before: rebels, empire, devastating weapon that can kill planets, and you're the best pilot in the galaxy." I'm wondering if it'll even be as entertaining as I remembered it.

Only worked because you remembered what the game called the bases.

That's because Battlezone was fucking radical. People would play the shit out of that game in a modern engine. Someone should make a UE3 mod! :)

I mean radical in the truest sense; it was an FPS/RTS in 1997 or whenever. It had terrain occlusion (sensors can't see through hills), tactical aid, terrain deformation and all kinds of shit way back when. It had an interface to allow people to issue orders, place structures, manage resources etc while blowing the shit out of russians with spaceguns.

And HOVERTANKS on the MOON fighting COMMUNISTS. :)

Funny enough they did make a new version, it’s an Xbox arcade game so you get the original version and a new version. No idea if the new version is any good but those arcade games tend to be good values.

Oh fuck man, fucking BATTLEZONE. How awesome was that game?!

Since the Russian Tsar was better than the American MBT it was always a good idea to try to find one on guard somewhere and snipe the pilot.

Or the external eject system actuator or whatever that big yellow dot was. :)

If you get the better textures and edit the config to push the draw distance out, BZ is extremely playable these days. You just wish for 5,000,000 poly tanks and HDR out the ass and stuff like that. :)

Yeah your right now that I searched the interwebs for info, I don’t have an Xbox, I just new I’d seen it looking through all the arcade games on someone else’s system. Still… they certainly could and should do a remake of the 1990s one. Some of those arcade games already easily have comparable graphics and they can charge whatever it cost them.

'Battlezone' was an old arcade game with vector graphics (ie, outlines of primitive shapes) where you drove a tank around and shot at the other tank. It's so old the score area at the top of the screen was made red by some red cellophane across that part of the screen. :D

In the 90s angels came down from heaven bearing a re-use of the brand, which uses the green vector graphics as the map motif. In this game you drive a variety of hovertanks on a variety of different planets as part of the ongoing secret war with the Russians over control of alien technology. While in your tank killing Russians you manage your base, position turrets, launch ammo packs, command a squad of tanks, etc. It has 'proper' graphics and is actually fun. When you die you shoot out of your tank and run around in a spacesuit trying to call for pickup or steal an enemy tank. :D

I'm totally gonna go and play that game today. Where can I get the better textures from?

You want the battlezone 'large assets' file, or the 1.4 patch (I think it's up to 1.4M) which should include it.

Thanks. I found this site: http://www.battlezone1.net/ which has all the assets. I'm not sure about legality of downloading the game itself, but I do have an original disc safely stashed away at home, and it has all the patches and stuff for anyone who needs it.

Ah man now I have to dig through all those old games in my cellar to find Battlezone :D God yeah, it was awesome. I'll have to try it out again with that better textures thing.

Hah, I found the same site. Turns out they're still working on it; there's even a dodgey 1.5 patch to get 'true' XP+ compatibility.

The awesomeness of Battlezone really makes a decade of games look pretty terrible by comparison. :(

Fuck, I was talking about the 90's game but I remember playing the really old one as well
I have no idea on which gaming system that was, but I remember putting those plastic sheets on the screen. Then again, for all I know this was something that was done by a lot of gaming systems.

Hell yeah. It's also pretty awesome that I can play it on my crappy work laptop and it runs totally smooth.

Though I wonder how much nostalgia factors into it. I guess I'll find out soon :D
