I've been trying to install Messenger recently, but all I get is this:
Error message wrote:
Could not access network location %APPDATA%\
Please close all other open programs, and then try again. It looks like another program is preventing the installer from working. hr:0x80070643
Thing is, I closed all the open programs that the installer would find. Perhaps I'm doing something else wrong?

A bit more info please, like what operating system are you trying this on.
Don't know if this is still the case but the newer versions of Messenger wouldn't install on 64bit MS OSes.

I use Windows Vista. As far as I know, Messenger is compatible with Vista.

It is in principle, but you're still not giving much info about your system. What's the version of Messenger you're trying to install? It hasn't been called MSN Messenger in ages, so if you're trying to install an old version it might just not work any more.
Alternatively if you're just mixing up the name, try these steps:
Clean install instructions:

If you're still out of luck try this:
Run an admin level command prompt window and type in:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 atl.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
Still no luck? (Re)install Windows Messenger (not to be confused with Windows Live Messenger)

And then try to install WL Messenger again.

Thanks. I'll see what I do.
