Free Games to Download?

I am bored and I am cheap. Are there any free games available for downloading online? And by download, I mean the legal kind. Preferably the ones that can also do multiplayer. I have Open Arena, but I'm getting tired of getting my ass beat in Fake Quake. So, yeah. Anyone got any suggestions?

Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine.
It's an MMO, and not quite as featureful or colourful as WoW, but it has the huge advantages of 1) being free, and 2) having a generally far more likable player base.

I dunno about free, but have you tried Steam? For next to free you can get a shitton of games for under $5.

If you want an X-Com type game,
UFO: Alien Invasion is free. You want to download a development version of 2.3 though, because the latest stable version is too unfinished.

I would recommend "
League of Legends", a game styled upon (and basically is a clone of) the Warcraft III map Defense of the Ancients. Except it is, well, free!
It earns much of its money through a system similar to what you see in GunBound, where one can buy heroes, skins, items, and other such paraphernalia with either points you earn in-game, or points bought with real-life money. There
are some occasions where their game servers may act a little bit wonky, but those are pretty spread apart and not all too common.

Oh, and there's also Command & Conquer classics.
http://www.commandandconquer.com/classic (not FPSy, but definitely free).

N is a pretty amazing platformer. Very elegant and simple, but with extremely deep physics.
The levels range from light fun to soul-crushingly difficult.

Oh, and that reminds me:
Dungeon Crawl is a fun (brutal) roguelike.
And it comes in a tile version if, like me, you can't quite deal with ascii "graphics".

Battle for Wesnoth. Its a fantasy tactical game.
Here's their site:

Warning: do not expect great graphics or writing. But I find that the replayability is high, and the music's pretty good. It has a large community which is always producing new content for the game, adding to said replayability. It also works on both Macs and Windows. And it meets your requirements of legal, free, and having multiplayer.
God, I've spent so many hours on this game.

So when a guy asks for a free FPS, the answer is 'Dwarf Fortress'?
Nexiuz is pretty generic but for $0 it's perfectly fine. There are plenty of free action/FPS games on phones, those free flash game websites, etc. You won't get much in the way of quality, though.
Isn't Battlefield Heroes 'free'?

Battlefield Heroes is also "shit" so I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

"The Hunter" is a free hunting sim. I've played it and it actually isn't too bad. It's worth playing for the scenery alone.

For fps, System Shock 2 is available for 'free' download if you can find it, I believe you have to sign up for some mailing list or something to get it though, and it has a lot of trouble running on Vista, I think.

I have been playing a fun snowboarding arcade racer called Project Powder. It's incomplete, a little buggy, and has a cash item shop that lets people with excess cash pay money for an unfair advantage, but it's still far more fun than many games I've payed for.

I believe you will enjoy Wolfenstein Enemy Territory. It will run on virtually any computer today and yet look great. The gameplay is extremely fun and there are shitloads of servers and people to play against.

I'd recommend Urban Terror for an FPS.

I've been able to get it to work following advice from
http://www.strangebedfellows.de/index.php?topic=392.0. Solid game, one of my favorites. I have the original from 1998, so I can't speak to this 'free' download, though.

Alright, I downloaded Wolfenstein. Now, how exactly do I play online?
