The lad and I have recently moved across the pond and, as such, sold our old home entertainment system as it was not compatible with the power over here. We are now in the market for a new system.

What we would like to do is get something that we can rip all our CD's to a hard drive so we can stash the CD's away (space is a premium in our current flat). We'd like to be able to access the music directly, without needing to hook a a PC/laptop up to it. It would also be good if we could set it up that we could have speakers in different parts of th house access it. We saw something at best buy that looks sort of what we want(http://www.bestbuy.com/site/NETGEAR+-+H ... &cp=1&lp=5). However, we also have a projector that we like to use to watch movies and it seems like a bit of a pain to rip a DVD every time we want to watch it; I imagine DVD's won't be used as repeatedly as CDs. We don't watch TV, so that's not a capability we need.

The market is absolutely saturated with network attached storage boxes. The basic questions are how many drives do you want to put in it (1 to 16+, with an extra drive for RAID if you want protection against drive failure), do you want to use it stand alone (for playback and/or recording live TV) or will it just be used as a storage bin, and do you want to pay extra for a nice case or a name brand. Note that if you're thinking about powering a proper speaker set you probably want a separate A/V receiver. Some of the expensive ones will stream video from NAT servers; some relatively cheap Blu-ray players will also do this, as will the Xbox 360 and PS3.
