Starcraft II Beta
So who's in the SC2Beta? Anyone gotten involved in this and/or rankings yet?
I managed to fight my way into the Silver League, but I'm having a tough time with ZvT matchups thusfar.

I predict I'm going to end up spending much of my summer on this.

Compellor.sysx. I'm in the copper league, but a friend and I have been playing together and got into the 2v2 gold league.

Is the beta worth the price of admission?
I've been thinking of picking up SC2 but am concerned that my decision is driven purely by nostalgia.

I gave the beta a spin and... it wasn't really my thing. Admittadly I just tested it out against the computer (which is set to very easy in the beta) so as you can imagine it doesn't give an idea of how games would go, but the thing felt... off to me. I can say that it is unquestionably better than the origional- they made some improvements so that you have more choices and options (you can improve your supply depos to hold raise your support cap- all it takes is energy from the command center, faster build or higher quality choice with reactor versus tech lab and upgrade for the overlord that can't pour creep, etc). It just feels off because of other games I've played with build orders of more than 5 units, streamlined economies and the like.Elessar wrote:Is the beta worth the price of admission?

It sounds like Blizzard is bravely pioneering the next five years after Starcraft was released.

If you were ever the type to want to compete against people of around your own skill level then I'd say it's most definitely worth it. The way that they've overhauled the ladder and ranking system is nothing short of phenomenal. Personally I feel gameplay is a little *more* hectic than it used to be, and as of yet there aren't any money-maps and the like floating around.
That said I love the game to pieces; it feels like it deserves to be a starcraft game even though it isn't at all a clone of starcraft I. It certainly is very different from other modern RTSes in terms of its shorter average game length and increased emphasis on rapid tactical play and constantly scouting and reacting to opponents' builds. I wouldn't pay $30 for this with the real game coming out end-of-July or anything, but with all these stores doing a "pre-order and get the Beta now" deal I can't really see any way to go wrong at this point.

Re: Starcraft II Beta
The person whose computer I played it on had something called "Starcrack AI" set up on it, which is apparently some sort of third party AI you get for the Beta. It was brutal, rushing you and not relenting. It took me quite a few tries to come out on top.Samuel wrote: I gave the beta a spin and... it wasn't really my thing. Not sure how well it stacks up against human players, but Hellion rushes seem to trump Zergling/Zealot rushes, but get pwned if they do a marine rush. The AI can still be reliably trumped by doing a photon cannon rush though, so make of it what you will
A scientist once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the Earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the centre of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy.
At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: 'What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise.
The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, 'What is the tortoise standing on?'
'You're very clever, young man, very clever,' said the old lady. 'But it's turtles all the way down.'

Re: Starcraft II Beta
Please tell me you can select more than a dozen units. Or have SCI nerds insisted otherwise for the sake of 'SKILLZ'?
"No, no, no, no! Light speed's too slow! Yes, we're gonna have to go right to... Ludicrous speed!"
Re: Starcraft II Beta
I didn't notice any selection limit.
