Nokia E71x - Black

Sos, I can get this phone for free from AT&T since my upgrade time is up, and it looks cool, but honestly, I know jack and shit about phones and the last one I picked (Sony Cybershot) was based on the resolution of the titty and ass pictures I could take with it and it's file managing system... i.e. how fast I could get to said pictures.

So does anyone know anything about this phone aside from the specs? Does Nokia even make good phones, all I remember about them is playing Snake. :D

Any info would be awesome.

P.S. Should I just save my pennies and get an unlocked Droid?

I was actually toying with getting this one myself and ditching Verizon since my contract is almost up, but I can't really say I've used it either. (Of course I was also looking at one of the Blackberry Curves too, so eh.)

I used an unlocked E71 with AT&T for a quite a while. It's a well built, slim - a decent phone, probably the best of the recent Nokias, much more reliable than my current N97. However, given the limited number of programs for the Ovi platform, especially in the United States, I would go for a BB (and a lot of friends are really into BBM), Android, WebOS or iPhone instead.

Depends on what you use your phone for, it's a good phone. The E-series Nokias kick the crap out of the N-series in almost every case. If you don't use a whole lot of applications, it's probably good for you. If you use a lot of apps, well, there are people here better qualified to tell you about that than I am.

Nokia has one of the best operating systems out there, though I haven't had the opportunity to try out Android.

I've had my regular E71 for nearly two years, and it's been a faithful and reliable servant to me.

Granted, I don't do a whole lot with it aside from calls, SMS, and looking at kitty pictures I take with the camera.

The E72 is almost the same but it has a much better camera, if that means something to you. It's also more expensive.

To answer Havok's original question: yes, Nokia makes great phones, that is the core telephone and SMS functionality is excellent and the Web browser and email clients are very decent as well. The cameras are in general quite good, for example the 3 MP camera of the E71x is about as good as the iPhone 3GS camera (in fact the camera hardware is likely the same). But like others have said, if you want all kinds of bells and whistles you might have more success with a BB, iPhone or Android phones, especially in the US.

Yes, I am the aware the E72 has a 5MP camera and a nice optical touchpad, as does the US T-Mobile E73. However, I about problems with stability, so sadly for me the E72 will always be under a cloud of suspicion.

A lot of the good apps for E71 are completely free. No app store bullshit to deal with. You can also.... Ahem....aquire everything that is not free by googling the huge community of semi legal symbian software sites. Nokia phones are not yet as crippled by drm that restrict what you can do with your own damn phone. You will not have to pay money just to get a good ringtone for instance.

In general terms the E71 and the E series is the working mans phone. Its not as pimped out or has super high resolution camera like N series. Instead it gives you a phone full of functionality you can use it like a small netbook computer.b

It's generally a very solid, reliable phone. What it does, it does well. It just doesn't do quite as much as many other smart phones. If all you're really looking for is basic phone functions (the features that are common to all new cell phones) plus a good camera and file management system, the Nokia won't let you down. It'll probably last longer than most of the other phones on the market too.

That said, you should be aware that you'll get more functionality out of most Blackberries, Android phones or the iPhone, if you're the type of person to make use of it.
