Learning MATLAB

There comes a time in every graduate students life where he must learn to use MATLAB. In my case, I was recently told this by my PI who's instructions were in fact "Have Colin give you the code for our algorithm that does the math in this paper. Go download MATLAB, learn it, and then figure out what the code means" with no further instructions. I've gone through some tutorials, but they've been kind of weak (as in, use MATLAB like a glorified calculator!). For more experienced users, could anyone recommend some books and resources that have been helpful to them?

Thanks a bunch.

I'd recommend Numerical Methods for Physics by Alejandro Garcia. The fact that he was one of my professor's at university has nothing to do with this shameless plug :D . Linky for some more information regarding the textbook.
