Advice on a new box

I'm not sure if this is really worth it's own new thread, but I didn't see one that it really fitted, so here it is. If there is somewhere it should go, kindly point me in the right direction and you'll never see me again
So my gaming computer finally died a death a couple of months ago while in the process of moving house. Best I can tell, the disk controller is fried, as it is failing to detect any bootable disks, even with known-good hard disks in place, and booting from a Windows or Ubuntu disk gives me an error about attempts being made to write to read-only memory. So, I'm looking at a new motherboard and processor. Trouble is, I've been out of the hardware game for a while (kids will do that to you), so I'm not too sure what I'm really looking for. Can anyone give me some suggestions on a decent motherboard/processor combo that:
1) Has PCI Express slots
2) Supports IDE and SATA
3) Is somewhere below $1000?
