Advice on a new box

I'm not sure if this is really worth it's own new thread, but I didn't see one that it really fitted, so here it is. If there is somewhere it should go, kindly point me in the right direction and you'll never see me again :)

So my gaming computer finally died a death a couple of months ago while in the process of moving house. Best I can tell, the disk controller is fried, as it is failing to detect any bootable disks, even with known-good hard disks in place, and booting from a Windows or Ubuntu disk gives me an error about attempts being made to write to read-only memory. So, I'm looking at a new motherboard and processor. Trouble is, I've been out of the hardware game for a while (kids will do that to you), so I'm not too sure what I'm really looking for. Can anyone give me some suggestions on a decent motherboard/processor combo that:

1) Has PCI Express slots
2) Supports IDE and SATA
3) Is somewhere below $1000?

*Ahem*

That said, check my latest post in that thread, the motherboard/processor/RAM combo to which I intend to upgrade fits all three criteria, and it has 2 SATA 3.0 and 2 USB 3.0 ports for further future-proofing. Depending on what you plan to do with it, you might be able to substitute the 6GB RAM kit for a 3GB one and save some money there, too. However, the motherboard has only one PATA port and no floppy drive port, so if you have more than 2 PATA devices or, for whatever bizarre reason, absolutely NEED an internal floppy drive, you'll need to choose a different one.
